El Salvador is, once again, under a dictatorship. It has become evident that the government of Nayib Bukele has revived the weaponization of state institutions for his personal benefit and the political persecution of those who do not align with his interests and those of his clan. This persecution encompasses impoverished communities, environmentalists, human rights defenders, academics, journalists, and anyone whose thinking diverges from the official narrative.
The dictatorship has forged mechanisms and laws designed to constrict civic space and muzzle dissenting voices. In this climate of persecution, cyber espionage, and assaults on independent journalism, GatoEncerrado has resolved to shutter its administrative and financial operations in El Salvador. It is impossible to exist as a legal entity in a country that disregards press freedom and due process, where the three branches of government are consolidated under a single individual who amends the Constitution of the Republic at will.
We have closed our office in El Salvador, yet we have not abandoned our mission to investigate and scrutinize those in power, as we have done since our inception in 2014. The essence of GatoEncerrado is to resist and adapt in order to persist in journalism, even amid the most adversarial conditions.
In this adaptation, we have relocated our legal entity to Costa Rica. From exile, we will continue to investigate, expose through journalism the abuses of power against the most vulnerable, and recount the stories that the powerful seek to bury in El Salvador and the broader Central American region.
The exile of GatoEncerrado marks merely the opening of a new chapter in the journalism we produce. We recognize that this shift presents challenges and obstacles we must confront to uphold the journalistic excellence that has defined us—rooted in our proximity to everyday people—yet we remain steadfast believers that this experience will propel us toward paths of innovation, bolstered by our ever-expanding community of readers.
To that community, we extend our gratitude for your unwavering support. Now, more than ever, we require your backing to disseminate our work to others and to ensure that our journalism endures and thrives in these times when dictatorships resurface like a virus across our region.
Dictatorships, squandering the taxes we citizens pay, can persecute and expel those who dare to denounce arbitrary rule, corruption, and human rights violations, but they cannot silence the truth. GatoEncerrado refuses to fall silent; from exile, we will be a resolute voice that does not waver.

El Salvador está, de nuevo, bajo dictadura. Ya es notorio que el Gobierno de Nayib Bukele ha resucitado la instrumentalización de las instituciones del Estado para su beneficio personal y la persecución política de aquellos que no se alinean a sus intereses y a los de su clan. En esa persecución se cuentan comunidades pobres, ambientalistas, defensores de derechos humanos, académicos, periodistas y cualquiera que piense distinto a la narrativa oficialista.
La dictadura ha creado mecanismos y leyes que buscan cerrar el espacio cívico y silenciar las voces disidentes. En ese contexto de persecución, ciberespionaje y ataques al periodismo independiente, GatoEncerrado decidió cerrar sus operaciones administrativas y financieras en El Salvador. Porque es imposible existir jurídicamente en un país que no respeta la libertad de prensa ni el debido proceso y que tiene los tres poderes del Estado concentrados en una sola persona que modifica la Constitución de la República a conveniencia.
Hemos cerrado nuestra oficina en El Salvador, pero no hemos renunciado a nuestro oficio de seguir investigando y fiscalizando al poder, como lo hemos hecho desde 2014 cuando nacimos. La naturaleza de GatoEncerrado es resistir y adaptarse para seguir haciendo periodismo, incluso en los contextos más hostiles.
En esa adaptación, trasladamos nuestra personería jurídica hacia Costa Rica. Desde el exilio seguiremos investigando, denunciando desde el periodismo los abusos del poder en contra de los más vulnerables y contando las historias que los poderosos quieren esconder en El Salvador y la región centroamericana.
El exilio de GatoEncerrado es tan solo el inicio de un nuevo capítulo en el periodismo que hacemos. Estamos conscientes de que esto marca desafíos y retos que debemos enfrentar para mantener la calidad periodística que nos ha caracterizado al estar siempre cercanos a la población de a pie, pero también somos fieles creyentes de que esta experiencia nos llevará por los caminos de la innovación, con el respaldo de nuestra comunidad de lectores que crece todos los días.
A esa comunidad queremos agradecer por siempre apoyarnos. Ahora, más que nunca, necesitamos su respaldo para compartir con otros nuestro trabajo y para hacer posible que nuestro periodismo se sostenga y siga vivo en estos tiempos cuando las dictaduras vuelven como un virus a nuestra región.
Las dictaduras, malgastando los impuestos que pagamos los ciudadanos, pueden perseguir y expulsar a quienes se atreven a denunciar la arbitrariedad, corrupción y violaciones a derechos humanos, pero no pueden callar la verdad. GatoEncerrado no está dispuesto a guardar silencio, por eso desde el exilio será una voz que no va a titubear.
