The lights came on Monday night on the top level of the new Mercado San Miguelito building, in the capital’s namesake San Miguelito neighborhood. According to vendors, President Nayib Bukele attended and entered the building, although the social media accounts of Casa Presidencial (Office of the President) did not announce it as the inauguration of the new facilities.

A select group of vendors gathered on the top level for the event, which was recorded by the government. Other vendors who had worked for years in the old building gathered outside the modern facilities, hoping either to see the president or to ask whether they would be assigned a space.

Some vendors who said they had spoken with the president said the meeting was to inform them that stall fees in the new building would not change. Despite Bukele’s presence last night, the new market is still not open to the public.

According to the vendors, the inauguration will be staggered, with each level opening on a different date.

The new Mercado San Miguelito, a four-story building, required an investment of $33.6 million.

The old building was roughly 45 percent destroyed in a fire on September 22, 2021, affecting around 800 vendors.

Construction of the new facility, overseen by the Dirección Nacional de Obras Municipales (National Directorate of Municipal Works, or DOM), began in 2022. It has capacity for 1,059 commercial stalls and spaces for the sale of staple grains, bazars, and a terrace.

Vendors who stayed outside the building said that 20 days ago DOM staff took down the names of about 300 people who would be allowed into the facilities. The rest of the vendors were told they could not enter because they were not on that list.

A woman who asked not to be identified said she signed up three times to be part of the event. When it came time to enter, she was told her name was not on the list.

“They have not told us anything; he (Bukele) just greeted us from his car and went inside,” said a business owner who witnessed the president enter the building on Monday night.

No press was invited to the event; however, content creators did show up at the site.

Shortly before 9:00 p.m., the president left the new building and greeted a few people. He made no statements.

Bukele enciende las luces del mercado San Miguelito, entre hermetismo y dudas

Las luces se encendieron este lunes por la noche en el nivel más alto del nuevo edificio del Mercado San Miguelito, en el barrio del mismo nombre, en la capital. Según comerciantes, asistió el presidente Nayib Bukele e ingresó al edificio, aunque en las redes sociales de Casa Presidencial no se oficializó que se tratara de la inauguración de las nuevas instalaciones.

En el piso más alto se congregó un grupo seleccionado de vendedores, quienes participaron en el acto, el cual fue grabado por el gobierno. Otros comerciantes, que por años trabajaron en el antiguo edificio, se congregaron en las afueras de las modernas instalaciones a la espera de poder  ver  al mandatario y/o de preguntar si habrá un espacio asignado para ellos.  

Algunos vendedores consultados, quienes afirmaron haber hablado con el mandatario, dijeron que se trató de reunión para avisarles que no habrá variación en el precio de los puestos en el nuevo edificio. Pese a la presencia de Bukele anoche, el nuevo mercado aún no está habilitado para el público.

Se realizará una inauguración segmentada, según los vendedores, y cada nivel se habilitará en distintas fechas.

El antiguo edificio fue consumido cerca del 45 % por un incendio ocurrido el pasado 22 de septiembre de 2021, afectando a alrededor  de 800 vendedores. 

El nuevo local cuya construcción estuvo bajo la responsabilidad de la Dirección Nacional de Obras Municipales (DOM)  dio inicio en el 2022. Cuenta con una capacidad de 1,059 puestos comerciales y espacios para la venta de granos básicos, bazares, y una terraza.

Los vendedores que se mantuvieron en las afueras del edificio comentaron que hace 20 días personal de la DOM anotó a unas 300 personas que ingresarían a las instalaciones. Al resto de comerciantes, les expusieron que no podían ingresar porque no estaban en dicha lista.

Una mujer que prefirió no identificarse comentó que se anotó en tres ocasiones para ser parte del evento. Ya al momento de entrar, le dijeron que no aparecía en listado.

«No nos han dicho nada, solo nos saludó (Bukele) desde su carro y se metió», dijo una propietaria de negocio quien presenció el ingreso del mandatario al edificio el lunes por la noche.

Al evento no hubo convocatoria a la prensa; sin embargo divulgadores de contenido sí llegaron al lugar. 

Poco antes de las 9 de la noche, el mandatario salió del nuevo edificio y saludó a algunas personas. No dio declaraciones.
