Certain lives become intertwined with a nation’s history; certain trajectories defy encapsulation in a single biography, for they evolve into collective symbols. Ricardo Poma was one such figure. A visionary entrepreneur, tireless philanthropist, and dedicated educator, he masterfully wove economic prosperity, social solidarity, and a commitment to knowledge into a single thread. His stature transcends the private realm and is etched into the public memory of El Salvador and Central America.
This was not merely about amassing companies, foundations, or projects, but about erecting a moral edifice where work and ethics stood as pillars. The Entrepreneur
Ricardo Poma (born in 1946) was an entrepreneur of exceptional caliber, serving as chief executive of Grupo Poma, the family conglomerate headquartered in San Salvador. He earned a degree in industrial engineering from Princeton University in 1967 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1970; upon his return, he assumed leadership of the group in the 1980s.
He inherited not merely a surname or a conglomerate, but the responsibility to perpetuate a family enterprise with roots dating back to 1919. From his youth, he recognized that El Salvador’s modernization demanded robust, diversified, and innovative companies. Thus, he took the helm of Grupo Poma and transformed it into a regional powerhouse of profound influence.
Under his stewardship, Grupo Poma diversified and consolidated its footprint across multiple sectors: automobiles, real estate, hospitality, industrial manufacturing, finance, and telecommunications. Its divisions encompassed Excel Automotriz, Grupo Roble, Real Hotels & Resorts, Solaire, and Autofácil (along with commercial developments such as Metrocentro and Multiplaza). The group extended its operations to nine countries in Latin America and the United States. Under his leadership, Grupo Poma generated more than 10,000 jobs and extended its presence to nine countries.
His corporate values formed the bedrock of the group’s success and endurance. He defined a culture rooted in integrity, excellence, passion for work, renewal, respect, solidarity, and service (“Somos Poma”), which he institutionalized with unwavering resolve.
He distilled his leadership philosophy into three words: vision, people, and passion, and emphasized that “it is the people who make the difference, especially when they act out of conviction and have a deep sense of motivation, identification, and commitment.”
During the centennial celebration of Grupo Poma (founded in 1919), he reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a legacy based on values and family unity: “it is a story of vision, audacity, hard work, and determination… with our sights always set forward… we reiterate our unwavering commitment…”. He also stressed that “always doing the right thing… in a clean, honest, and decent way” is fundamental to operating for another century.
In recognition of his entrepreneurial and social accomplishments, he received the Order of Merit of November 5, 1811, Heroes of National Independence, in 2019—the highest honor bestowed by the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador. In his acceptance speech, he highlighted the need to combat poverty and work to create opportunities, saying that he felt “proud as a Salvadoran” and that the award “compels me to continue contributing to the transformation of the country.”
The Philanthropist
His philanthropy transcended sporadic donations; it was systemic, meticulously planned, and far-reaching. It stemmed from a profound conviction: a nation’s development cannot be built without education, health, and culture.
In 1984, he established the Poma Foundation, dedicated to projects in education, health, and culture, which he chaired until the end of his life.
He also served as president of FUSAL (Salvadoran Foundation for Health and Human Development), through which he sponsored programs in early childhood, nutrition, and early stimulation, distributing more than US$600 million in medicines, supplies, and medical equipment.
Through the Poma Foundation, more than 1,700 scholarships have been awarded for technical and university studies, including programs such as Becas al Talento (Talent Scholarships), the Rector’s Scholarships for Excellence, ¡Supérate!, and scholarships for the children of employees at ESEN.
In 2013, he and his family launched the Renacer Foundation, focused on youth aging out of foster care homes, offering 12 months of technical training, English classes, and Microsoft Office certification, in addition to job placement with partner companies.
He also created cultural initiatives such as the Luis Poma Theater, founded in 2003 in honor of his father, which has provided a stage for more than 500 Salvadoran artists and attracted over 300,000 spectators. He also established the Ovación Award (since 2008) to recognize creative stage productions.
On multiple occasions, he urged fellow entrepreneurs to engage beyond business: “We entrepreneurs cannot be mere spectators… we have a responsibility to be committed actors, placing our time, experience, and resources at the service of the country to bring about the necessary transformations that drive social progress.”
His philosophy made clear that “service to society is an activity integral to our business operations, because we cannot be mere spectators…”
The Educator
“Academic excellence and opportunity for all.” With that maxim, he founded the Escuela Superior de Economía y Negocios (ESEN) in 1993 alongside other entrepreneurs. It was not enough to donate scholarships: an institution was needed to cultivate principled leaders capable of transforming the region.
ESEN is guided by the mission of training leaders with academic excellence and open access: “academic excellence and opportunity for all.” More than 2,000 graduates have been trained by ESEN, of whom two out of every three received scholarships or financial aid.
The 30th anniversary of ESEN was a very significant milestone for him, as it successfully reflected that impact: “we are fulfilling our objective of positively impacting the region through our more than 2,500 graduates.”
The school has also innovated with new programs, such as the launch of the degree in Software Engineering and Digital Business, betting on the potential of nearshoring and the region’s bilingual talent.
An exemplary leader has passed away, an unwavering believer in collective progress and a craftsman of opportunity. His memory will endure in the history of El Salvador as a beacon of integrity, humanity, and vision.
Ricardo Poma, a Social Architect

El Empresario
Ricardo Poma (nacido en 1946) fue un empresario de trayectoria excepcional, director general de Grupo Poma, el conglomerado familiar con sede en San Salvador. Cursó ingeniería industrial en la Universidad de Princeton (1967) y obtuvo un MBA en Harvard Business School en 1970; tras su regreso, asumió el liderazgo del grupo en la década de 1980.
No heredó solo un apellido ni un conglomerado; heredó la responsabilidad de continuar una obra familiar con raíces en 1919. Desde su juventud supo que la modernización de El Salvador requería empresas sólidas, diversificadas e innovadoras. Así tomó las riendas de Grupo Poma y lo transformó en un actor regional de gran impacto.
Bajo su dirección, Grupo Poma diversificó y consolidó su presencia en múltiples sectores: automóviles, bienes raíces, hotelería, manufactura industrial, financiamiento y telecomunicaciones. Sus divisiones incluyeron Excel Automotriz, Grupo Roble, Real Hotels & Resorts, Solaire y Autofácil (además de Metrocentro y Multiplaza como desarrollo comercial). Su forma de liderazgo la condensó en tres palabras: visión, gente y pasión, y destacaba que “la gente es la que hace la diferencia, sobre todo cuando actúa por convencimiento y tiene un alto grado de motivación, identificación y entrega”.
Durante la celebración del centenario de Grupo Poma (fundado en 1919), reafirmó la importancia de mantener un legado basado en valores y unidad familiar: “es una historia de visión, audacia, trabajo y determinación… con la vista siempre puesta hacia adelante… reiteramos nuestro indeclinable compromiso…”. Subrayó asimismo que “hacer siempre lo correcto… de una forma limpia, honesta, decente” es fundamental para operar durante un siglo más.
En reconocimiento a su trayectoria empresarial y social, recibió la “Orden al Mérito 5 de Noviembre de 1811, Próceres de la Independencia Patria” en 2019, la máxima condecoración que otorga la Asamblea Legislativa de El Salvador. En su discurso, resaltó la necesidad de combatir la pobreza y trabajar por oportunidades, diciendo que se sentía “enorgullecido como salvadoreño” y que ese reconocimiento lo “impulsa a seguir contribuyendo para transformar el país”.
El filántropo
Su filantropía no se redujo a donativos ocasionales; fue estructural, planificada, de largo alcance. Todo formaba parte de una convicción profunda: el desarrollo de un país no puede construirse sin educación, sin salud, sin cultura.
En 1984 creó la Fundación Poma, destinada a proyectos en educación, salud y cultura, la cual estuvo bajo su presidencia hasta el final de su vida.
Además, fue presidente de FUSAL (Fundación Salvadoreña para la Salud y el Desarrollo Humano), desde donde auspiciaron programas de primera infancia, nutrición y estimulación temprana, y distribuyeron más de US$600 millones en medicinas, insumos y equipo médico.
Desde Fundación Poma se han otorgado más de 1,700 becas para estudios técnicos y universitarios, incluyendo programas como Becas al Talento, Becas del Rector a la Excelencia, ¡Supérate! o Becas para hijos de colaboradores en ESEN.
En 2013 impulsó, junto a su familia, Fundación Renacer, enfocada en jóvenes que egresan de hogares de acogida, ofreciendo capacitación técnica de 12 meses, clases de inglés y certificación en paquete Office, además de inserción laboral en empresas asociadas.
Además, creó iniciativas culturales como el Teatro Luis Poma, fundado en 2003 en honor a su padre, que ha dado espacio a más de 500 artistas salvadoreños y ha atraído a más de 300,000 espectadores. También impulsó el Premio Ovación (desde 2008) para reconocer propuestas escénicas creativas
En múltiples ocasiones instó a los empresarios a involucrarse más allá de los negocios: “Los empresarios no podemos ser simples espectadores… tenemos la responsabilidad de ser actores comprometidos poniendo al servicio del país nuestro tiempo, experiencia y recurso para provocar las transformaciones necesarias que impulsen el progreso social”.
Su filosofía dejó claro que “el servicio a la sociedad es una actividad transversal a nuestra operación empresarial, porque no podemos ser solo espectadores…”
El educador
“Excelencia académica y oportunidad para todos.” Con esa frase fundó junto a otros empresarios la Escuela Superior de Economía y Negocios (ESEN) en 1993. No bastaba con donar becas: había que crear una institución que formara líderes íntegros, capaces de transformar la región.
ESEN está guiada por la misión de formar líderes con excelencia académica y acceso abierto: “excelencia académica y oportunidad para todos”. Más de 2,000 graduados han sido formados por ESEN, de los cuales dos de cada tres recibieron becas o financiamiento.
El 30° aniversario de ESEN fue un hito muy significativo para él, pues reflejaba exitosamente ese impacto: “estamos cumpliendo nuestro objetivo de impactar positivamente a la región a través de nuestros más de 2,500 graduados”.
La escuela también ha innovado con nuevos programas, como el lanzamiento de la carrera en Ingeniería de Software y Negocios Digitales, apostando al potencial del nearshoring y capacidades bilingües de la región.
Fallece un líder ejemplar, un convicto del progreso colectivo y un artesano de oportunidades. Su recuerdo perdurará en la historia de El Salvador como faro de integridad, humanidad y visión.
Ricardo Poma, un arquitecto social
Ricardo Poma fue más que un empresario, más que un filántropo, más que un educador. Fue un arquitecto social, un hombre que entendió que el éxito personal carece de sentido si no se traduce en bienestar colectivo.
