On Monday, reports circulated on social media claiming that the San Vicente de Paul Children’s Home would no longer be administered by the Daughters of Charity religious order, but by the State.
In response, two journalists from LA PRENSA GRÁFICA visited the location to confirm the information with the sisters and inquire about the reasons for the change.
The journalists were met at the entrance to the home by an agent of the Policía Nacional Civil (PNC) from the División de Protección a Personalidades Importantes (Division for the Protection of Important Personalities, PPI).
The newspaper’s staff explained the purpose of their visit to the agent, who escorted them to the reception area and requested their identification. He recorded the names and Documento Único de Identidad (DUI) numbers of the reporter and photographer; he also asked them to put away their cell phones “for the children’s safety.”
While waiting in reception, the journalists verified the presence of personnel wearing shirts and credentials with government insignia.
When the agent returned, he informed the journalists that they would not be received and told them to go to the Consejo Nacional de la Primera Infancia y Adolescencia (National Council for Early Childhood and Adolescence, CONAPINA). After that, a person wearing a shirt with government insignia asked the journalists to leave the premises.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA subsequently visited the Daughters of Charity convent, where a source confirmed the administrative change and expressed concern for the boys and girls at the San Vicente de Paul home.
“The sisters will no longer be in charge of the home; for the past few days, government personnel have been working there,” the source stated. “I feel sorry for the children, as the sisters love them dearly,” the source added.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA sent an email to CONAPINA Executive Director Linda Amaya on Monday afternoon to confirm the changes at the home. As of press time, there had been no response.
Decline in Religious Vocations
On Monday night, the Compañía de las Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paúl, Provincia de América Central (Company of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Central America Province) posted a statement on Facebook announcing that, as of September 1, 2025, it will cease providing services at the San Vicente de Paul Children’s Home.
The decision stems from a review process of its works initiated in 2020, “which has entailed discernment, prayer, and dialogue to determine where best to serve the poorest and most needy,” states the text signed by Sister Delia M. Cabrera G., Daughter of Charity.
Among the factors influencing the withdrawal is the decline in religious vocations, which prevents the order from maintaining the necessary personnel to continue running the institution, the religious company adds.
The San Vicente de Paul Home has been served by the Sisters since 1877 and directly administered by them since 1974.
Following the closure of this chapter, the Daughters of Charity confirmed that they will maintain their work at Hogar Moraga (Moraga Home), in coordination with CONAPINA, as well as in schools and other social services benefiting the most needy.
Hijas de la Caridad se retiran del Hogar del Niño San Vicente de Paul
Este lunes circuló en redes sociales información en la cual se aseguraba que el Hogar del Niño San Vicente de Paul ya no sería administrado por la orden de religiosas Hijas de la Caridad, sino por el Estado.
A raíz de esto, dos periodistas de LA PRENSA GRÁFICA visitaron el lugar para tratar de confirmar con las religiosas si esta información era verdadera y cuáles serían las razones del cambio.
Los periodistas fueron recibidos en la entrada del hogar por un agente de la Policía Nacional Civil (PNC), de la División de Protección a Personalidades Importantes (PPI).
Los miembros de este periódico explicaron al agente la razón de la visita y este los trasladó al área de recepción donde les solicitó sus documentos de identificación. Este anotó los nombres y el número del Documento Único de Identidad (DUI) de la reportera y el fotógrafo; además les pidió guardar sus teléfonos celulares “por seguridad de los niños”.
Mientras los periodistas esperaban en recepción corroboraron la presencia de personal identificado con camisas y gafetes del Gobierno.
Cuando el agente regresó informó a los periodistas que no serían atendidos y les dijo que se dirigieran al Consejo Nacional de la Primera Infancia y Adolescencia (CONAPINA). Tras eso, una persona que vestía una camisa con los distintivos del Gobierno solicitó a los periodistas que se retiraran del lugar.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA visitó después el convento de las Hijas de la Caridad donde una fuente confirmó el cambio de administración y mostró preocupación por los niños y niñas que están el hogar San Vicente de Paul.
“Ahora ya no son las hermanas quienes se van a hacer cargo del hogar, desde hace unos días hay personas del Gobierno trabajando ahí”, aseguró la fuente. “A mí me dan pesar los niños, pues las hermanas los quieren mucho”, agregó.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA escribió la tarde de este lunes un correo electrónico a la directora ejecutiva de CONAPINA, Linda Amaya, para confirmar los cambios dentro del hogar. Al cierre de esta nota no hubo respuesta a la solicitud.
Disminución de vocaciones
La noche de este mismo lunes, la Compañía de las Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paúl, Provincia de América Central, publicó en Facebook un comunicado en el que informan que a partir del 1 de septiembre de 2025 dejará de prestar sus servicios en el Hogar del Niño San Vicente de Paúl.
La decisión obedece a un proceso de revisión de obras iniciado en 2020, “que ha implicado discernimiento, oración y diálogo para determinar dónde servir mejor a los más pobres y necesitados”, dice el texto firmado por Sor Delia M. Cabrera G., Hija de la Caridad.
Entre los factores que influyen en el retiro se encuentra la disminución de vocaciones religiosas, lo que impide contar con el personal necesario para continuar dirigiendo la institución, agrega la Compañía religiosa.
El Hogar San Vicente de Paul fue atendido por las Hermanas desde 1877 y administrado directamente por ellas desde 1974.
Tras el cierre de esta etapa, las Hijas de la Caridad confirmaron que mantendrán su labor en el Hogar Moraga, en coordinación con el CONAPINA, así como en escuelas y otros servicios sociales en favor de los más necesitados.
