The Salvadoran NGO Cristosal, which championed the migrants before it was forced into exile, stated that the release “does not erase the gravity of the human rights violations” perpetrated and called for an investigation.
“This release is undoubtedly a step forward, but it must not be regarded as an act of justice, but rather as part of a political deal to exchange individuals who had been unlawfully detained. Therefore, we believe this development more closely resembles a hostage swap conducted outside any framework of international humanitarian law, and it reveals how some governments wield the unjustified imprisonment of people as bargaining chips,” the organization declared.
“Not one of them should have spent a single minute here in El Salvador inside a maximum-security prison; they have no case pending either before United States courts or before ours,” said one of the attorneys representing the Venezuelans, speaking from San Salvador.
Aircraft carrying migrants arrive in Venezuela daily under the agreements Nicolás Maduro reached with Donald Trump when he returned to the White House. The dispatch of migrants to El Salvador, however, rattled those negotiations.
Approximately 8,300 migrants, including about 1,000 children, returned to Venezuela on 45 flights between February and this Friday. The planes carrying the Venezuelan migrants sent by the United States to El Salvador’s mega-prison for gang members landed on Friday at the airport that serves Caracas.
“Free, free at last!” Maduro exclaimed during an official event that coincided with the aircraft’s arrival.
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello and other authorities boarded the first aircraft before the passengers disembarked. The passengers then sang the Venezuelan national anthem.
“I am so happy, my heart is bursting with joy,” Mercedes Yamarte, mother of Mervin Yamarte, one of the men detained at the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (Terrorism Confinement Center, CECOT), told AFP. “I’ve arranged his welcome. I’m going to make him a soup.”
Venezuela also held demonstrations to demand the release of these Venezuelans. That same Friday, 251 migrants deported from Houston arrived, including seven children who had been separated from their parents. During the reception for that flight, Cabello declared: “We continue to demand the freedom of all Venezuelans kidnapped by the Government of the United States, by the Government of El Salvador, by the criminal Nayib Bukele. We demand that every one of them be returned to our country.”
Cristosal: Liberación no borra gravedad de violaciones cometidas
La ONG salvadoreña Cristosal, que defendía a los migrantes antes de salir al exilio, indicó que la liberación “no borra la gravedad de las violaciones de derechos humanos” cometidas, y pidió una investigación.
“Esta liberación es sin duda un avance, pero no debe verse como un acto de justicia, sino como parte de un acuerdo político para intercambiar personas que habían sido detenidas de manera ilegal. Por tanto, consideramos que este hecho se acerca más a un intercambio de rehenes realizado fuera de todo marco de derecho internacional humanitario, y que muestra como algunos gobiernos usan el encierro injustificado de personas como si fuera una moneda de cambio”, se pronunció.
“Ellos no tenían que pasar ni un minuto por acá (El Salvador) en una prisión de máxima seguridad, ellos no tienen ningún caso pendiente ni con la justicia norteamericana, ni con la nuestra”, comentó, por su parte, desde San Salvador, uno de los abogados que representaba a los venezolanos.
Aviones con migrantes llegan cotidianamente a Venezuela como parte de los acuerdos a los que llegó Nicolás Maduro con Donald Trump cuando regresó a la Casa Blanca. El envío de migrantes a El Salvador sacudió no obstante las negociaciones.
Unos 8,300 migrantes regresaron a Venezuela entre febrero y este viernes en 45 vuelos, incluidos unos 1,000 niños. Los aviones con los migrantes venezolanos que fueron enviados por Estados Unidos a la megacárcel de pandilleros de El Salvador aterrizaron el viernes en el aeropuerto que sirve a Caracas.
“¡Libres, libres al fin!”, celebró Maduro desde un acto oficial que coincidió con la llegada de la aeronave.
El ministro del Interior, Diosdado Cabello, y otras autoridades subieron a la primera aeronave antes del desembarque. Los pasajeros entonaron entonces el himno venezolano.
“Estoy muy feliz, la felicidad no me cabe en el pecho”, dijo a la AFP Mercedes Yamarte, madre de Mervin Yamarte, uno de los detenidos el Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT). “Cuadré (organicé) el recibimiento, qué le voy a hacer, voy a hacer una sopa”.
Venezuela celebró además manifestaciones para exigir la liberación de estos venezolanos. Este mismo viernes llegaron a deportados desde Houston 251 migrantes, entre ellos siete niños que habían sido separados de sus padres. Durante la recepción de ese vuelo, Diosdado Cabello declaró: “Seguimos exigiendo la libertad de todos los venezolanos secuestrados por el Gobierno de Estados Unidos, por el Gobierno de El Salvador, del delincuente de Nayib Bukele, a todos ellos exigimos que sean devueltos a nuestro país”.
