The Catholic Church once again urged the Salvadoran government to repeal the state of exception and the Metallic Mining Law.
Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chávez emphasized that the Salvadoran people have the right to choose “with freedom, to do good without fear of oppression,” in reference to the state of exception, which has been in effect in the country since March 2022.
“The state of exception, though necessary at one point to curb violence and deemed successful for its outcomes, has lingered too long, and we believe it is no longer warranted. It is about allowing the people to exercise their freedom without any duress, for the people cannot keep doing good, acting rightly, out of dread of the state of exception’s repercussions,” said Cardinal Rosa Chávez, reading the Episcopal Conference’s statement.
The prelate reiterated that the Salvadoran population must opt for good without fear or repression. “We ask that this end as soon as possible so people can express themselves freely.”
Since last May 30, the Episcopal Conference of El Salvador (CEDES), which brings together the country’s Catholic bishops, has advocated for the repeal of the state of exception.
On another front, Chávez also stated that the release of captured human rights defenders is essential.
“We demand their release; that is our stance. Human dignity cannot be bargained away—it is infinite, as Pope Francis has said—and here it is being crushed, and we must declare it plainly, with a spirit geared toward solutions. Dialogue is always the path, and dialogue demands listening,” said the cardinal.
He also lamented the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaraguan and Honduran citizens, asserting that “God did not build borders.”
In addition, he underscored the need to abolish the law permitting mining in the country, which was approved on December 23, 2024.
“The candles we will carry to Chapeltique with the slogan ‘Yes to life, no to mining’ reflect our deep concern and fervent desire to safeguard our common home, because without that, we have no future,” affirmed Chávez, when asked about the status of the Church’s petition to repeal the Mining Law in the country.
Iglesia católica reitera llamado a derogar el régimen de excepción y ley de minería
La Iglesia Católica pidió una vez más al Gobierno salvadoreño derogar el régimen de excepción y la Ley de Minería Metálica.
El cardenal Gregorio Rosa Chávez recordó que el pueblo salvadoreño tiene derecho a elegir “con libertad, hacer el bien sin temor a ser oprimido”, en referencia al régimen de excepción, vigente en el país desde marzo de 2022.
“El estado de excepción, aunque en otro momento fue necesario para frenar la violencia y se consideró exitoso por sus resultados, pero ha pasado el tiempo y consideramos que ya no es necesario. Se trata de permitir al pueblo ejercer su libertad sin presión alguna, pues el pueblo no puede continuar haciendo el bien, actuando bien por temor a las consecuencias del régimen de excepción”, dijo el cardenal Rosa Chávez, leyendo el pronunciamiento de la Conferencia Episcopal.
El religioso reiteró que la población salvadoreña debe optar por hacer el bien sin miedo y represión. “Pedimos que esto termine cuanto antes y la gente pueda expresarse libremente”.
Desde el 30 de mayo pasado, la Conferencia Episcopal de El Salvador (CEDES), que aglutina a los obispos de la Iglesia católica del país, abogó por la derogación del régimen de excepción.
Por otro lado, Chávez también dijo que es necesario que se liberen a los defensores de derechos humanos capturados.
“Se pide que sean liberadas, esa es nuestra postura. La dignidad humana no se puede negociar, es infinita decía el papa Francisco y aquí se está aplastando esa dignidad, y hay que decirlo con claridad y con espíritu de buscar soluciones, el diálogo es el camino siempre y el diálogo supone a escuchar”, dijo el cardenal.
También lamentó la cancelación del programa Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) para ciudadanos nicaragüenses y hondureños, y aseguró que “Dios no construyó fronteras”.
Por otra parte, recordó que es necesaria la eliminación de la ley que permite la minería en el país, aprobada el 23 de diciembre de 2024.
“Las velas que vamos a llevar a Chapeltique con el lema de ‘Sí a la vida, no a la minería’, son porque tenemos esa inquietud y deseo grande de que nuestra casa común la cuidemos, porque si no, no tenemos futuro”, afirmó Chávez, al ser cuestionado sobre qué ha pasado con la petición de la Iglesia para derogar la Ley de Minería en el país.
