President Nayib Bukele pledged on Thursday, May 22, for the fourth time in four years, to improve conditions in the country’s schools, a promise he has not yet fulfilled, as he admitted in his latest speech.
On November 1, 2021, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Chivo Pets veterinary hospital, he made one of his first public pledges.
“The other thing I wanted to announce is that when this project was undertaken, we hadn’t earned as much money in the Bitcoin trust as we have now; so, we now have a couple of million dollars more than we had when we decided to do this project. Therefore, we have decided to build the first twenty Bitcoin schools, which will be twenty schools for humans, to be remodeled and equipped with full technology thanks to the Bitcoin trust,” the president stated on that occasion.
However, he did not specify when these renovations would begin or where these twenty schools are located.
These statements were made two months after the Bitcoin Law came into effect on September 7, 2021.
Bukele again pledged the construction of the twenty Bitcoin schools on November 25, 2021, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Manuel José Arce binational bridge in the San Francisco Menéndez district, Ahuachapán Sur.
On that occasion, he also noted that the school renovations were being carried out through various initiatives, undertaken by the Dirección de Obras Municipales (Directorate of Municipal Works, DOM) and the Mi Nueva Escuela [My New School] program, which had support from the Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (Central American Bank for Economic Integration, CABEI).
“And we also have the Bitcoin schools project, which will initially start with twenty; but those will be added to the other 600, making it 620 schools in a year, which means almost two schools per day, two per day just for schools. And ‘Mr. President, why don’t you do ten per day?’ Firstly, because we would run out of schools in a year, and secondly, because we can’t, because we were given a government to manage, not a magic wand,” the president asserted.
On September 7, 2022, Bukele officially launched an ambitious program to remodel 5,150 schools nationwide over five years.
Additionally, the first thousand were to be renovated in the first year.
“The other important thing is that we are going to remodel 5,150 educational centers; one thousand per year. The project will take five years,” he stated to those who had gathered for the inspection of the remodeling of the “Doctor José Ciro Brito” Educational Complex in the Nahuizalco district, Sonsonate Norte.
He noted that the first thousand schools he pledged to renovate in the first twelve months already had financing from government funds and from CABEI, the Banco Mundial (World Bank), and the Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (Inter-American Development Bank, IDB).
On May 22, 2025, the president again pledged to renovate two schools daily after clarifying the multi-million dollar investment made in education, amounting to $1.411 billion in the first five years of his administration.
“But there is something they criticize us for, apart from all that which has no basis, the only criticism that does have some basis is ‘Mr. President, you said you were going to do a thousand schools in a year and you haven’t done them.’ That’s the only criticism I accept from them; but we didn’t do them because, unfortunately, we thought the schools were in a different situation,” he stated during the inauguration of the facilities at the Cantón Santa Clara School Center in San Luis Talpa, La Paz.
He added that among the issues with the schools were that their construction, in some cases, involved corrugated sheets and branches, they lacked electrical and drainage systems in some instances, and, furthermore, some operated on land not owned by the Ministry of Education.
At the event, he again pledged to renovate two schools per day and, unlike on previous occasions, he launched the website https://dosescuelasxdia.com/ for the public to verify which institutions have been improved.
As of this Friday, the page reported the first four schools renovated. The information details the investment, number of student beneficiaries, construction area, educational levels served, details of the work, and the entity that executed the project.
It also features photographs of the new infrastructure.
“We have already built many schools, but it is still very slow, and we want to go faster. I know we promised an average of almost three schools daily, which we cannot do; but we can do two daily. Having reviewed budgets, plans, everything, we are going to launch the Two Schools per Day program,” Bukele stated.
Bukele ha ofrecido remodelar dos escuelas diarias desde hace cuatro años
El presidente Nayib Bukele ofreció el jueves 22 de mayo, por cuarta ocasión en cuatro años, mejorar las condiciones en las escuelas del país sin que a la fecha lo haya cumplido tal como lo aceptó en su último discurso.
El 1 de noviembre de 2021, en el marco de la colocación de la primera piedra del hospital veterinario Chivo Pets, hizo uno de los primeros ofrecimientos públicos.
“Lo otro que quería anunciarles es que cuando se hizo este proyecto no habíamos ganado tanto dinero en el fideicomiso Bitcoins como hemos ganado ahora; entonces, ya nos sobran un par de millones de dólares más que no sobraban cuando decidimos hacer este proyecto, así que hemos decidido hacer las veinte primeras escuelas bitcoins, que serán veinte escuelas para humanos, que serán remodeladas y con toda la tecnología gracias al fideicomiso Bitcoins”, señaló el presidente en aquella oportunidad.
Sin embargo, no detalló cuándo iban a iniciar dichas intervenciones o en el lugar donde se ubican esas veinte escuelas.
Dichas declaraciones fueron dadas dos meses después de que comenzó a implementarse la Ley Bitcoins, el 7 de septiembre de 2021.
Bukele volvió a ofrecer la construcción de las veinte escuelas bitcoins el 25 de noviembre de 2021 durante la colocación de la primera piedra de los trabajos de construcción del puente binacional Manuel José Arce, en el distrito de San Francisco Menéndez, Ahuachapán Sur.
En esa oportunidad señaló, además, que la intervención de las escuelas se estaba ejecutando con diferentes iniciativas, que estaban siendo hechas por la Dirección de Obras Municipales (DOM) y el programa Mi Nueva Escuela que tenía el apoyo del Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE).
“Y también tenemos el proyecto de escuelas bitcoins que inicialmente va a iniciar con veinte; pero esas se van a sumar a las otras 600 y luego van hacer 620 escuelas en un año, lo que quiere decir dos escuelas por día, casi, dos por día sólo en el tema de escuelas. Y ‘¿presidente por qué no hace diez por día?’ Primero porque nos acabaríamos todas las escuelas en un año y segundo porque no podemos porque nos dieron un gobierno para administrar no nos dieron una varita mágica”, aseguró el mandatario.
El 7 de septiembre de 2022, Bukele lanzó oficialmente el ambicioso programa de remodelación de 5,150 centros escolares a nivel nacional, en un periodo de cinco años.
Además de que las primeras mil iban a ser intervenidas en el primer año.
“Lo otro que es importante es que vamos a remodelar 5,150 centros educativos; mil por año. El proyecto va a tardar cinco años”, señaló ante las personas que habían llegado al acto de supervisión de la remodelación del Complejo Educativo “Doctor José Ciro Brito” el distrito de Nahuizalco, en Sonsonate Norte.
Las primeras mil escuelas que ofreció intervenir en los primeros doce meses, señaló que ya tenían un financiamiento con fondos propios y del BCIE, del Banco Mundial y del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID).
El 22 de mayo de 2025, el mandatario volvió a ofrecer la intervención de dos escuelas diarias luego de aclarar la millonaria inversión que ha hecho en el tema de educación, que asciende a $1,411 millones en los primeros cinco años de su gestión.
“Pero hay algo que nos critican, a parte de todo eso que no tiene ni una base, lo único que nos critican que sí tiene alguna base y es ‘presidente usted dijo que iba a hacer mil escuelas en un año y no las ha hecho’. Esa es la única que les aceptó la crítica; pero no las hicimos porque lastimosamente nosotros pensamos que las escuelas estaban en otra situación”, señaló durante la inauguración de las instalaciones del Centro Escolar Cantón Santa Clara, en San Luis Talpa, La Paz.
Agregó que entre las situaciones de las escuelas está que su construcción, en algunos casos, eran de láminas y ramas, no tenían sistemas eléctricos y drenajes, en algunos casos, y, además, algunas funcionaban en terrenos que no estaban a favor del Ministerio de Educación.
En el evento, nuevamente hizo el ofrecimiento de intervenir dos escuelas por día y, a diferencia de las otras ocasiones, es que habilitó el sitio web https://dosescuelasxdia.com/ para que la población verifique cuáles son las instituciones mejoradas.
La página reportaba, este viernes, las primeras cuatro escuelas intervenidas. En la información se detalla la inversión, cantidad de estudiantes beneficiados, área de construcción, niveles educativos que atiende, detalle de los trabajos, y entidad que ejecutó el proyecto.
También consignan fotografías de las nuevas infraestructuras.
“Hemos construido ya muchas escuelas; pero aún es muy lento y queremos ir más rápido. Sé que prometimos casi el promedio de tres escuelas diarias, lo cual no podemos hacerlo; pero sí podemos hacer dos diarias. Ya revisando presupuestos, ya revisando planos, ya revisando todo, vamos a lanzar el programa Dos escuelas por día”, señaló Bukele.
