Eleonora Alfaro, the mother of Ruth López, an anti-corruption lawyer and human rights defender in El Salvador who was detained Sunday night, on Monday held President Nayib Bukele responsible for the arrest and demanded her release.

“I demand Ruth’s freedom and I demand it from Nayib Bukele, because he is the one responsible for this,” Alfaro said at a press conference alongside López’s partner, Louis Benavidez.

The Prosecutor’s Office, which accuses López of embezzlement from her time as an assistant to former official Eugenio Chicas, has not detailed the amount the lawyer is accused of misappropriating, nor has it provided further information on the case so far.

The mother asserted that her daughter’s anti-corruption and human rights defense work is what “led to them coming and capturing her.”

“What they have done to my daughter has been cruel. No mother can remain silent about this. They are committing a crime against Ruth,” said the lawyer’s mother during a press conference with Cristosal, which described the act as a forced disappearance.

For his part, Benavidez described the detention as “arbitrary and illegal” and maintained that they do not know her whereabouts and that authorities have also not allowed her to communicate with her lawyers.

“We want to express our concern because since her detention last night, we have had no communication with her, and we have not been informed firsthand of a specific location where she is being held,” Benavidez said.

He lamented that “we are not sure what might be happening to her” and affirmed that “this is happening because of her work defending human rights.”

López, named by the BBC in 2024 to its list of the 100 most influential women of that year, is head of the Anti-corruption department at the organization Cristosal, one of the most reputable in the Central American country.

Noah Bullock, executive director of Cristosal, said at the same press conference that López’s lawyers tried to go to the location where she was allegedly being held, but were met by National Civil Police (PNC) officers with “great hostility,” and it was not possible to locate her.

The lawyer has participated in filing various unconstitutionality lawsuits, reports related to transparency, in submitting notices to the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the irregular use of state funds, and in sessions of the Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, IACHR) regarding El Salvador.

La madre de Ruth López, abogada anticorrupción y defensora de derechos humanos en El Salvador detenida la noche del domingo, Eleonora Alfaro, responsabilizó este lunes al presidente Nayib Bukele del arresto y exigió su liberación.

“Yo exijo la libertad de Ruth y se la exijo a Nayib Bukele, porque él es el causante de esto”, dijo Alfaro en una conferencia de prensa junto al compañero de vida de López, Louis Benavidez.

La Fiscalía, que acusa a López de peculado cuando fue asistente del exfuncionario Eugenio Chicas, no ha detallado el monto cuestionado a la letrada, ni ha brindado -hasta el momento- más información sobre el caso.

La madre aseguró que la labor anticorrupción de su hija y de defensa de derechos humanos es lo que “le ha traído que llegaran y la capturaran”.

“Ha sido una crueldad lo que han cometido con mi hija. Ninguna madre puede callar esto. Están cometiendo un crimen contra Ruth”, dijo la madre de la abogada durante una conferencia de prensa junto a Cristosal, que calificó el hecho como una desaparición forzada.

Por su parte, Benavidez calificó la detención de “arbitraria e ilegal” y sostuvo que desconocen su paradero y que las autoridades tampoco han permitido que se comunique con sus abogados.

“Queremos externar nuestra preocupación, porque desde la detención, ayer en la noche, no hemos tenido comunicación con ella y no hemos conocido de primera mano un lugar específico donde ella esté detenida”, dijo Benavidez.

Lamentó que “no tenemos certeza de qué le pueda estar pasando” y afirmó que “esto está ocurriendo por su labor en defensa de los derechos humanos”.

López, incluida en 2024 por la BBC en la lista de las 100 mujeres más influyentes de ese año, es jefa del área Anticorrupción de la organización Cristosal, una de las más reputadas en el país centroamericano.

Noah Bullock, director ejecutivo de Cristosal, dijo en la misma conferencia de prensa que los abogados de López intentaron presentarse en el lugar en el que supuestamente se encontraba detenida, pero fueron recibidos por agentes de la Policía Nacional Civil (PNC), con “mucha hostilidad”, sin que fuera posible localizarla.

La abogada ha participado en la presentación de diversas demandas de inconstitucionalidad, informes relacionados con transparencia, en la presentación de avisos a la Fiscalía para que investigue el uso irregular de fondos estatales y en sesiones de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) sobre El Salvador.
