El congresista caído en desgracia convertido en presentador de cable MAGA Matt Gaetz encabezó una delegación de diputados republicanos —y un congresista demócrata— en una visita a la tristemente célebre megaprisión de El Salvador, donde reclusos deportados de Estados Unidos increparon y provocaron al grupo mientras recorrían las instalaciones.

Afirmando ser el «primer periodista estadounidense dentro» del pabellón que alberga a reclusos acusados de pertenecer a la banda venezolana Tren de Aragua, Gaetz emitió un segmento en su programa de One America News (OAN) el lunes por la noche sobre su visita al Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (Terrorism Confinement Center), conocido como CECOT.

Durante todo el reportaje de Gaetz, que incluía al partidario de Trump recorriendo los pasillos de la instalación de máxima seguridad con varios miembros del Congreso, gran parte del metraje se centró en la diferencia de comportamiento entre los acusados de pertenecer a la MS-13 y los encarcelados en el pabellón del Tren de Aragua (TdA).

«Lo que ninguna otra organización de noticias les ha mostrado hasta ahora es el pabellón específico en el CECOT que alberga a los miembros del Tren de Aragua, con base en Venezuela, que el presidente Trump deportó. Vean si pueden notar que reaccionan de manera diferente», señaló Gaetz el lunes por la noche.

Luego emitió un extenso video de la delegación caminando por la sección que alberga a miembros acusados del TdA que habían sido deportados recientemente de Estados Unidos mediante la Ley de Enemigos Extranjeros (Alien Enemies Act), una ley de poderes de guerra poco utilizada. Después de que el presidente anunciara la proclamación, un juez federal suspendió las deportaciones, pero aviones llenos de migrantes venezolanos ya habían sido enviados a El Salvador y han estado encarcelados desde entonces. Vuelos adicionales de deportación de migrantes venezolanos han permanecido suspendidos en medio de batallas judiciales.

Según el metraje que Gaetz emitió, los reclusos del pabellón de la MS-13 se mostraron generalmente educados y tranquilos cuando la delegación pasaba, mientras que en el pabellón del TdA los prisioneros increpaban, provocaban y gritaban ruidosamente al presentador de OAN y a los diputados. Los miembros del Congreso que acompañaron a Gaetz fueron los representantes Andy Ogles (republicano por Tennessee), Anna Paulina Luna (republicana por Florida) y Vicente Gonzalez (demócrata por Texas), a quien Gaetz describió como «el usualmente razonable demócrata de Texas».

Señalando las duras condiciones que sufre la mayoría de los reclusos alojados en la prisión, Gaetz afirmó entonces que a los prisioneros deportados de Estados Unidos se les proporcionan mejores alojamientos y comida. Indicando que al resto de los prisioneros solo se les sirve arroz y frijoles como comida, Gaetz emitió imágenes de un guardia del CECOT mostrando una caja que contenía una hamburguesa y papas fritas, insistiendo en que esta es la comida típica en el pabellón del TdA.

«Esa es una buena comida. ¿Puedo probarla? ¿Puedo darle un bocado?», declaró Luna antes de tomar una papa frita.

«Los estadounidenses están pagando por el encarcelamiento del Tren de Aragua. Es una ganga por 6 millones de dólares», afirmó Gaetz en su reportaje. «Por eso, El Salvador está tratando realmente a los recién llegados venezolanos mejor que a sus compatriotas asesinos».

Que Gaetz lidere una delegación del Congreso en una gira televisiva por la megaprisión, calificada por grupos de derechos humanos como un «gulag tropical», difícilmente debería sorprender.

Tras el fallido intento del exdiputado de Florida de convertirse en fiscal general de Trump, se informó que Gaetz de hecho propuso al subjefe de gabinete de Trump, Stephen Miller, la idea de enviar migrantes al CECOT después de visitar al presidente salvadoreño Nayib Bukele el año pasado.

Durante la visita, Bukele le dijo a Gaetz que estaría dispuesto a encarcelar en la prisión a los migrantes que Trump quisiera expulsar de Estados Unidos si este ganaba las elecciones. Al día siguiente, Gaetz recibió un recorrido por el CECOT, lo que lo impulsó a sugerirle la idea a Miller cuando regresó del viaje.

«Las condiciones habían arrebatado a los habitantes cualquier voluntad de luchar», dijo Gaetz sobre la visita. «Es duro ver el estado de la condición humana despojada de esperanza».

Deported inmates taunt and mock Matt Gaetz and GOP delegation visiting El Salvador mega prison for OAN show

Disgraced congressman turned MAGA cable host Matt Gaetz led a delegation of Republican lawmakers – and one Democratic congressman – on a visit to El Salvador’s notorious mega-prison, where prisoners deported from America heckled and taunted the group as they toured the facility.

Claiming that he is the “first American journalist inside” the ward that holds inmates who are accused of being in the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, Gaetz aired a segment on his One America News show Monday night of his visit to the Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT.

Throughout Gaetz’s report, which included the Trump loyalist walking through the halls of the maximum-security facility with several members of Congress, much of the footage focused on the difference in behavior between accused MS-13 members and those incarcerated in the TdA ward.

“What no other news organization has shown you until now is the specific ward at CECOT that holds the Venezuelan-based Tren de Aragua members President Trump deported. See if you can notice them reacting differently,” Gaetz noted on Monday night.

He then aired a lengthy clip of the delegation walking through the section housing accused TdA members who had recently been deported from America through the Alien Enemies Act, a little-used wartime powers law. After the president announced the proclamation, a federal judge paused the deportations, but planeloads of Venezuelan migrants had already been shipped to El Salvador and have been imprisoned since. Additional deportation flights of Venezuelan migrants have remained on hold amid court battles.

According to the footage Gaetz aired, the inmates in the MS-13 ward were generally polite and calm when the delegation passed by, while the TdA ward featured the prisoners loudly heckling, taunting and shouting at the OAN host and lawmakers. The members of Congress who accompanied Gaetz were Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) and Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), whom Gaetz described as “the usually reasonable Texas Democrat.”

Noting the harsh conditions that the majority of inmates suffer while housed in the prison, Gaetz then asserted that the prisoners deported from America are provided better accommodations and food. Pointing out that the rest of the prisoners are only served rice and beans for meals, Gaetz aired footage of a CECOT guard displaying a box containing a burger and fries, insisting that this is the typical meal in the TdA ward.

“That’s a good meal. Can I try it? Can I take a bite?” Luna declared before nabbing a fry.

“Americans are paying for the Tren de Aragua incarceration. It’s a bargain at $6 million,” Gaetz stated in his report. “For that, El Salvador is actually treating the Venezuelan new arrivals better than their murderous countrymen.”

Gaetz leading a Congressional delegation for a made-for-TV tour through the mega-prison, which has been decried by human rights groups as a “tropical gulag,” should hardly come as a surprise.

Following the former Florida lawmaker’s failed bid to become Trump’s attorney general, it was reported that Gaetz actually pitched Trump deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller on the idea of sending migrants to CECOT after he visited El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele last year.

During the visit, Bukele told Gaetz that he’d be willing to imprison migrants at the prison that Trump wanted removed from the United States if Trump won the election. The following day, Gaetz was given a tour of CECOT, prompting him to float the idea to Miller when he returned from the trip.

“The conditions had zapped the inhabitants of any will to fight,” Gaetz said of the visit. “It’s tough to see the state of the human condition drained of hope.”
