During a press conference, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), Adriano Espaillat, spoke out against the detention of Salvadoran Kilmar Abrego García, who was deported to the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) during mass deportations carried out by the Trump administration.
Regarding his detention and stay in the mega-prison, Espaillat stated that “there is no legal action for which [Kilmar] should be detained” and “what has happened here should never have happened in the United States; he [Kilmar] was expelled without any due process and is now in a torturous and damned prison in El Salvador.”
He also explained that García’s story deserved to be known because “this affects people who are legally here [USA], including you as citizens. U.S. citizens who do not fit the profile are also being detained, interrogated, and transferred.”
Senator Chris Van Hollen added that a Maryland court and a Federal District Court found there was no legal basis for the Salvadoran’s arrest, detention, or removal. He also stated that the U.S. administration is lying about the accusations against Kilmar: “J.D. Vance lied when he said Kilmar had been convicted of a crime in the United States. Absolutely false. And the Vice President of the United States should apologize to the family; he should do it right now.”
Diplomats Joaquín Castro, Chuy García, and Nydia Velásquez attended the conference. The deported Salvadoran’s family was also present; Kilmar’s wife, Jennifer Vásquez, stated that “an administrative error” destroyed her family’s happiness, adding that Kilmar should have returned home just 50 hours after his detention.
“It has been 28 days since I lost my husband. Since his children hugged him, since his mother kissed him, since his brother spoke to him. The judge said this shouldn’t have happened, said that my life partner, Kilmar, should have been home 50 hours ago,” Vásquez recounted.
Jennifer also took the opportunity to send a message to her husband: “Kilmar, if you can hear me, I am still fighting for you. Your brother, your mother, our children, are still fighting for you. We will not give up hope for justice from the Supreme Court. History will always remember you… If you are strong, I will be strong,” she said.
“To everyone at home, who can still hear my voice, who are fighting for the return of their loved ones, keep fighting for Kilmer and all the Kilmars out there.”
Kilmar was detained in March 2025 during what seemed like a routine traffic stop. At the time of the arrest, officers told his wife that Ábrego García’s immigration status “had changed,” and it wasn’t until she identified him in a photo on social media that she learned his whereabouts.
The man was transferred to a detention center in Texas and then to the maximum-security prison in El Salvador under an agreement between the Trump and Bukele governments to send alleged criminals there. His lawyers claim that authorities “were aware” of their client’s protected immigration status and still decided to send him to the Salvadoran mega-prison.
U.S. immigration authorities called the transfer an “error” but claim they do not have the authority to return him to the United States because he is now in the custody of a foreign government. The Trump Administration also maintains that Ábrego García, who was never tried in the United States, is an MS-13 member and should not return to the country.

Por medio de una conferencia de prensa el presidente del Caucus Hispano del Congreso, Adriano Espaillat, se pronunció en contra de la detención del salvadoreño Kilmar Abrego García, quien fue deportado al Centro del Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) en las deportaciones masivas realizadas por la administración Trump.
Sobre su detención y estadía en la megacárcel, Espaillat dijo que “no hay ninguna acción legal por la que (Kilmar) debe estar detenido” y “lo que ha pasado aquí nunca debería haber pasado en los Estados Unidos, él (Kilmar) fue expulsado sin ningún proceso justificado y ahora está en una cárcel tortuosa y maldita en El Salvador”.
Además, expuso que la historia de García merecía conocerse, pues, “esto afecta a las personas que están legalmente aquí (EUA), incluyéndolos a ustedes como ciudadanos. Los ciudadanos estadounidenses que no cumplen con el perfil también están siendo detenidos, interrogados y trasladados”.
Por su parte el senador Chris Van Hollen, agregó que un juzgado de Maryland y un juzgado de la Corte Federal de Distrito, encontraron que no había ningún grado legal para el arresto, detención o remuevo del salvadoreño. Dijo, además, que la administración estadounidense miente sobre las acusaciones contra Kilmar: ” J.D. Vance mintió cuando dijo que Kilmar había sido convicto de un crimen en los Estados Unidos. Absolutamente falso. Y el vicepresidente de los Estados Unidos debería disculparse con la familia, debería hacerlo ahora mismo”.
A la conferencia asistieron los diplomáticos Joaquín Castro, Chui Garcíay Nidia Velásquez. La familia del salvadoreño deportado también hizo acto de presencia en la conferencia; la esposa de Kilmar, Jennifer Vásquez, declaró que “un error administrativo” destruyó la felicidad de su familia, además expuso que Kilmar tendría que haber regresado a casa solo 50 horas luego de su detención.
“Han pasado 28 días desde que perdí a mi marido. Desde que sus hijos lo abrazaron, desde que su madre lo besó, desde que su hermano lo habló. El juez dijo que esto no debería haber sucedido, dijo que mi compañero de vida, Kilmar, debería haber vuelto a casa hace 50 horas”, relató Vásquez.
Jennifer también aprovechó la oportunidad para enviar un mensaje a su esposo: “Kilmar, si me escuchas, todavía estoy luchando por ti. Tu hermano, tu madre, nuestros hijos, todavía están luchando por ti. Pero no vamos a dar esperanza a la justicia de la Suprema Corte por la justicia. La historia siempre te recordará… Si tú eres fuerte, yo seré fuerte”, dijo.
“A todos los que están en casa, que todavía pueden escuchar mi voz, que están luchando por el regreso de sus queridos, que sigan luchando por Kilmer y todos los Kilmars que están afuera”.
Kilmar fue detenido en marzo de 2025 en lo que parecía una parada de tráfico rutinaria. Al momento de la detención, los oficiales dijeron a su esposa que el estatus migratorio de Ábrego García “había cambiado” y no fue hasta que le identificó en una foto de redes sociales que no supo dónde estaba.
El hombre fue trasladado a un centro de detención en Texas y luego a la cárcel de máxima seguridad de El Salvador con motivo de un acuerdo entre los Gobiernos de Trump y Bukele para enviar allí a supuestos criminales. Sus abogados alegan que las autoridades “estaban al tanto” del beneficio migratorio de su cliente y aún así decidieron enviarlo a la megacárcel salvadoreña.
Las autoridades migratorias estadounidenses calificaron el envío de “error”, pero alegan que no tienen potestad para devolverlo a Estados Unidos porque ahora está bajo custodia de un gobierno extranjero. La Administración de Trump sostiene además que Ábrego García, quien nunca fue juzgado en Estados Unidos, es un miembro de MS-13 y que no debe regresar al país.
