Twenty-four-year-old Yeferson Yohaldi Campos, a young man who was released with kidney failure after spending two years in prison under the state of exception, died this afternoon, according to Socorro Jurídico Humanitario (Humanitarian Legal Aid).
Yohaldi was released from the Quezaltepeque prison on September 13, 2024, only days after that organization reported his case to the Naciones Unidas (United Nations) system.
However, the family encountered a young man whose health was just a shadow of what it had been before.
The relatives of the freed man said he arrived with his entire body swollen, and they were informed by prison authorities that he had to continue treatment for kidney failure and take high blood pressure medication for the rest of his life.
“When we saw him, it really hurt to see him in that condition because he left healthy. He was someone who used to say we were weak, because even the common cold never affected him. When I saw him, I really felt like crying, but at the same time, I had to be strong,” the freed man’s brother told this news outlet in October of last year.
Since returning home, Yohaldi found no peace; he suffered from anxiety, nightmares, swelling in his body, and his health gradually deteriorated.
His health situation caused serious financial problems for his family, who had to hold raffles and sell their belongings in order to collect money to pay for transportation for his hemodialysis. They reported that in the final weeks, he was hospitalized and had to be intubated.
“All I have left is the peace of mind that I did everything I could for my son; now I only ask God for strength,” the young man’s mother said.
Yohaldi’s brother thanked Socorro Jurídico Humanitario for its support because it allowed them to spend the last five months with his brother, even though his health was already in a very serious condition.
The young man was arrested during a raid carried out by police officers and soldiers in the early hours of July 11, 2022, in a hamlet in the jurisdiction of San Jorge, in Usulután, where he had gone to live with his girlfriend a few months earlier.
His family learned of his arrest from the same police officers, because they received a call informing them that he was being held at the nearby station.
His mother and brother went to the station, and there the brother asked the officers for an explanation of the reason for the arrest and asked them to show him the arrest warrant, but they did not explain why he had been taken into custody.
For the first 10 months, he was held at the Mariona prison, and then, without notice, he was transferred to the Quezaltepeque prison.
After he was transferred, despite the mother’s repeated requests for information about her son’s health, the guards told her they could not give her any information.
It was not until the second month of his being in that prison that the guards told the woman that the young man was suffering from kidney failure. A medical document now in the family’s possession confirms this.
From that point on, the defense attorney began the paperwork to arrange a special hearing so that he could be granted alternative measures to imprisonment and continue the process in freedom. This process took more than a year.
The family says that before his arrest, Yohaldi worked in construction.
Muere joven liberado con insuficiencia renal tras dos años encarcelado
Yeferson Yohaldi Campos, de 24 años, un joven liberado con insuficiencia renal después de pasar dos años en prisión en el contexto del régimen de excepción, murió esta tarde, según informó el Socorro Jurídico Humanitario.
Yohaldi fue liberado del penal de Quezaltepeque el 13 de septiembre de 2024 , solo días después que esa organización denunció su caso ante el sistema de Naciones Unidas.
Sin embargo, la familia se encontró con un joven que no era ni la sombra de lo que fue antes, en cuanto a la salud.
Los familiares del liberado relataron que venía con todo el cuerpo inflamado y fueron informados por las autoridades penitenciarias que tenía que seguir el tratamiento para la insuficiencia renal y tomar de por vida un medicamento para la presión alta.
“Cuando lo vimos, dolió verlo así realmente porque él se fue sano. Era una persona que decía que nosotros éramos débiles, porque a él ni gripe no le daba. Cuando lo vi realmente sentí ganas de llorar, pero a la vez me hice fuerte”, explicó el hermano del liberado a este medio en octubre del año pasado.
Desde que regresó a casa Yohaldi no tuvo paz, tenía ansiedad, pesadillas, inflamación en el cuerpo y su salud se fue deteriorando poco a poco.
La situación de salud provocó graves problemas económicos para la familia, quienes tuvieron que hacer rifas y vender lo que tenían, para poder recolectar dinero para pagar el transporte para que recibiera sus hemodiálisis. Las últimas semanas pasó hospitalizado y tuvo que ser intubado, relataron.
“Solo me queda la tranquilidad que hice todo lo que pude por mi hijo, ahora solo espero que Dios me de fuerza” manifestó la madre del joven.
El hermano de Yohaldi agradeció el apoyo del Socorro Jurídico porque eso les permitió estar con su hermando los últimos cinco meses, aunque ya estaba muy grave de salud.
El joven fue capturado durante una redada realizada por policías y soldados durante la madrugada del 11 de julio de 2022 en un cantón de la jurisdicción de San Jorge, Usulután, donde se había ido a vivir con su novia, unos meses antes.
Su familia supo de su captura por la misma Policía, debido a que recibieron una llamada informándoles que estaba detenido en la delegación cercana.
Su madre y su hermano fueron hasta el lugar y ahí el hermano le pidió a los agentes una explicación sobre la razón de la detención y les pidió que le mostraran la orden de captura, pero no les explicaron por qué lo habían detenido.
Los primeros 10 meses estuvo recluido en el penal de Mariona, luego, sin aviso, fue enviado a la prisión de Quezaltepeque.
Después que fue trasladado, pese a la insistencia de la madre para que le brindaran información sobre la salud de su hijo, los custodios le decían que no podían decirle nada.
Fue hasta el segundo mes de estar en esa prisión, que los custodios le comentaron a la señora que el joven padecía insuficiencia renal. Un documento médico, ahora en poder de la familia respalda ese dato.
A partir de ese momento, el abogado defensor comenzó los trámites para lograr una audiencia especial para que se le otorgaran medidas alternas a la prisión y continuar el proceso en libertad. Proceso que llevó más de un año.
La familia asegura que antes de ser detenido Yohaldi se dedicaba a la albañilería.
