Members of the Movimiento Voces del Futuro discussed the impacts of metal mining in the country, especially on the environment. One of the cases mentioned by Daniela Ferrufino, a member of the organization, was that of the San Sebastián River in La Unión. According to her, it is “completely dead” due to contamination from this activity.
“I know there are many people who don’t know that this river is contaminated by mining and are unaware of its history. So, I decided to visit it, and it was truly shocking to see how the river is completely dead,” Ferrufino said Wednesday on Radio YSUCA.
She also reported that local residents have tried to use the river water without success, as it is so heavily contaminated that it cannot even be used to wash clothes.
“When we were in the area, we had the opportunity to speak with the residents, who told us that the water is basically useless. They even tried drinking it to see if it might be usable, but the water isn’t even fit for washing clothes because of the level of chemicals it contains. It isn’t compatible with laundry soap,” the environmentalist explained.
“We decided to go deep inside the mines, and they told us to be cautious because there are certain metals that are extremely dangerous. If they come into contact with the air, it becomes heavily contaminated, and that will eventually affect our lungs,” she added.
Ferrufino also expressed concern about the displacement of communities that live on land slated for mining.
“There are a lot of people living on mining lands because the properties aren’t just mountains; for several kilometers around, many people have been living there for years. But those lands don’t belong to them; they were only given permission to live there. The day mining resumes, it’s clear all those people will be relocated,” she detailed.
Meanwhile, Father Neftalí Ruiz, also a member of Voces del Futuro and bishop of the Iglesia Católica Antigua (Ancient Catholic Church), stated that metal mining poses a threat to the environment and rural communities.
“I think people who are in favor of mining speak from a place of privilege because they say they can buy water and don’t need river water. Maybe they never depended on the earth’s pure resources; they simply adapted to another reality, but they don’t think about the majority of the country. Practically all those rural areas, I can assure you, depend on water, not just directly but also indirectly through fishing, for livestock to drink, and to irrigate crops,” the bishop noted.
The Movimiento Voces del Futuro announced it will continue organizing activities against metal mining. They also said there will be a commemorative event on February 23 in San Isidro, Cabañas, in memory of environmentalists who were killed some years ago.

Miembros del Movimiento Voces del Futuro abordaron los impactos de la minería metálica en el país, sobre todo en el medio ambiente. Uno de los casos mencionados por Daniela Ferrufino, integrante de la organización, fue el del río San Sebastián, ubicado en La Unión. Según dijo este se encuentra “completamente muerto” debido a la contaminación generada por esta actividad.
“Yo sé que hay mucha gente que no sabe que ese río está contaminado por minería y no conocen su historia, entonces decidí ir a visitarlo y estando allá fue verdaderamente impactante ver cómo está ese río, completamente muerto”, mencionó este miércoles Ferrufino en la entrevista de la radio YSUCA.
Además, informó que los habitantes de la zona han intentado utilizar el agua del río sin éxito, ya que presenta un alto nivel de contaminación que impide su uso incluso para lavar ropa.
“Estando en la zona pudimos tener la oportunidad de hablar con los pobladores que nos comentaban que el agua no sirve para absolutamente nada, ellos trataron de beber incluso esa agua para ver si les servía, pero el agua no sirve ni siquiera para lavar la ropa por el nivel de químicos que tiene. No es compatible con el jabón de lavar ropa”, explicó la ambientalista.
“Decidimos adentrarnos a las minas y nos dijeron que hay que tener cuidado porque hay ciertos metales que son sumamente peligrosos, que si llegan a entrar en contacto con el aire, este será contaminado de una manera tremenda y después a nosotros se nos van a afectar los pulmones”, comentó.
Ferrufino también expresó preocupación por el desplazamiento de comunidades que habitan en terrenos destinados a la explotación minera.
“En los terrenos de las minas hay un montón de personas que habitan ahí porque los terrenos no son simplemente montañas, sino que en varios kilómetros a la redonda hay mucha gente viviendo ahí desde hace años, pero esos terrenos no pertenecen a esas personas, a ellos les dieron como un permiso para habitar ahí. El día de que se llegase a reactivar la minería claramente van a movilizar a todas esas personas”, detalló.
Por su parte, el padre Neftalí Ruiz, también miembro de Voces del Futuro y obispo de la Iglesia Católica Antigua, afirmó que la minería metálica representa una amenaza para el medio ambiente y las comunidades rurales.
“Las personas que están a favor de la minería considero que hablan desde el privilegio porque ellos dicen que compran agua y no necesitan del agua de los ríos, es porque nunca dependieron, a lo mejor, de los recursos puros de la tierra, sino que simplemente se adaptaron a otra realidad, pero no piensan en la mayoría del país prácticamente porque todas esas zonas rurales, puedo asegurar, dependen del agua y no solo directamente, sino también de forma indirecta por medio de la pesca, que el ganado toma de esa agua y riegan sus cultivos”, señaló el obispo.
El Movimiento Voces del Futuro anunció que continúa organizando actividades en contra de la minería metálica. También dijo que habrá un evento conmemorativo el 23 de febrero en San Isidro, Cabañas, en memoria de los ambientalistas asesinados hace algunos años.
