Vendors in the Historic Center of San Salvador clashed with members of the Cuerpo de Agentes Metropolitanos (CAM) (Metropolitan Agents Corps) due to the confiscation of merchandise by the agents, according to reports shared by citizens on various social media platforms who witnessed the events.
The confrontation took place yesterday afternoon on Avenida Cuscatlán. According to videos posted on TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook, CAM agents used batons to strike vendors, while the vendors resisted the confiscation of their goods.
Cruz Verde Salvadoreña (Salvadoran Green Cross), which also reported on the incident, stated that it provided assistance to 17 people who had been pepper-sprayed. “Our volunteers from Cruz Verde Mejicanos and Cruz Verde Santa Anita offered support to 17 individuals affected by exposure to pepper spray,” the organization said.
Although the videos show physical exchanges between the CAM agents and the vendors, the Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro (Mayor’s Office of central San Salvador) described the incident as an alleged ambush against the agents, who have been accused of assaulting vendors since last year.
“This afternoon, while our CAM agents were carrying out routine procedures in the Historic Center, they were ambushed by a group of supposed merchants who attacked them,” the capital municipality reported on its official X account.
Furthermore, the municipality said it is working in coordination with the Policía Nacional Civil (PNC) (National Civil Police) to investigate the alleged assault on the agents.
Meanwhile, one vendor stated that the agents confiscated his merchandise and sprayed him with pepper spray.
“The CAM officers just took my merchandise—my livelihood—and took $100 from me. They also confiscated my documents, leaving me with only $10,” he claimed.
A local witness who saw the agents confiscate the vendors’ equipment said the vendor was walking with his cart when the agents approached and took his products. “It’s true. They were just walking by when the officers took their merchandise,” the witness said.
On social media, vendors have also accused CAM agents of stealing merchandise and reselling it. The Gerencia de Prensa (Press Management) at the Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro (Mayor’s Office of central San Salvador) indicated that the confrontation began after a vendor’s cart was confiscated.
“While carrying out a routine inspection, some individuals were warned not to remain in the no-vending zone. On another round, we found them there, and on that occasion, the cart was confiscated,” they explained. According to the Press Management’s account, when they went to seize the cart, “the vendor became upset by the procedure, and another group of supposed vendors started blocking the truck’s passage.”
The vendor allegedly tried to recover his merchandise, the statement continued, and that was the moment the confrontation broke out.
Vendedores y agentes del CAM se enfrentan en Centro Histórico de San Salvador
Vendedores del Centro Histórico de San Salvador se enfrentaron a miembros del Cuerpo de Agentes Metropolitanos (CAM) debido al decomiso de mercaderías por parte de los agentes, según reportaron en distintas redes sociales ciudadanos que presenciaron los hechos.
El enfrentamiento ocurrió la tarde ayer en la avenida Cuscatlán. Según se observa en videos compartidos en TikTok, X (antes Twitter) y Facebook, agentes del CAM golpearon a vendedores con macanas, mientras los comerciantes se resistían al decomiso de sus ventas.
Cruz Verde salvadoreña, que también reportó el hecho, informó que atendió a 17 personas que fueron rociadas con gas pimienta. “Nuestros voluntarios de Cruz Verde Mejicanos y Cruz Verde Santa Anita brindaron asistencia a 17 personas afectadas por la exposición a gas pimienta”, informó la institución.
Aunque en los videos se observa el intercambio de golpes entre agentes del CAM y los vendedores, la Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro ha reportado el enfrentamiento como una supuesta emboscada en contra de los agentes, quienes han sido denunciados desde el año pasado por agresiones a los vendedores.
“Esta tarde mientras nuestros agentes del CAM realizaban procedimientos de rutina en el Centro Histórico fueron emboscados por un grupo de supuestos comerciantes quienes los agredieron”, informó la comuna capitalina a través de su cuenta oficial de la red X.
Además, la municipalidad dijo que está trabajando en coordinación con la Policía Nacional Civil (PNC) para investigar la supuesta agresión que sufrieron.
Mientras que un vendedor dijo que los agentes les quitaron la venta y les tiraron gas pimienta.
“Los del CAM me acaban de quitar mi venta, mi subsistencia, y me quitaron $100. Mis papeles también me los quitaron, solo $10 me dejaron”, afirmó.
Un ciudadano que presenció cuando les decomisaron sus instrumentos indicó que el vendedor iba caminando con su carreta cuando se le acercaron los agentes y les quitaron su venta. “Es cierto, ellos solo iban cuando les quitaron su venta”, dijo el ciudadano.
En redes sociales, vendedores también han señalado a agentes del CAM de robarles mercadería y revender los productos. La Gerencia de Prensa de la Alcaldía de San Salvador Centro indicó que el enfrentamiento se dio luego de que se decomisó a un vendedor un carretón.
“Cuando se iba haciendo el recorrido de rutina hubo unos señores que se les advirtió que no estuvieran en la zona libre de ventas, se hizo otro recorrido, estaban ahí y en otra ocasión se procedió a a retener el carretón”, explicaron. Según la versión de la Gerencia de Prensa, al momento de retener el carretón “el señor se ofusca por el procedimiento, y otro grupo de supuestos vendedores empiezan a impedir el paso del camión”.
El vendedor habría intentado recuperar su venta, indicó, y es ahí cuando se dio el enfrentamiento.
