Since the riot was reported at the Izalco Prison Center in Sonsonate, on the night of Wednesday, January 8, relatives of inmates have gathered both outside the prison and at the “Dr. Jorge Mazzini” Sonsonate National Hospital to try to get information on who is injured and what has happened.
Isabel (name changed for her safety) is the sister of an inmate and expressed that “as a family member, you worry and want to know something, but they don’t give you exact information. They send you from one place to another. I’ve been wandering around the entire hospital and no one says anything.”
A security officer at Mazzini Hospital mentioned on the morning of January 9 that they have been ordered not to provide any information.
“The order is not to give information about anything, even if people say we treat them badly. There are no lists here, no hospitalized inmates, nothing,” he explained.
A source close to the prison reported that authorities from the Prison Centers arrived in Sonsonate the night of the incident. According to this source, about 25 inmates were involved in the brawl, and some were transferred to Mazzini Hospital, while those with more severe injuries were taken to San Salvador.
As of the closing of this report, the hospital security staff reiterated that no information would be provided to either relatives or the press about the situation of the inmates involved.
Meanwhile, in the Facebook group of the Movement of Victims of the State of Exception (MOVIR), mothers are pleading for information.
Familiares de reos involucrados en motín en penal de Izalco exigen información
Desde que se reportó el amotinamiento en el Centro Penal de Izalco, en Sonsonate, la noche del miércoles 8 de enero, familiares de privados de libertad se han congregado tanto en las afueras del penal como en el Hospital Nacional de Sonsonate “Dr. Jorge Mazzini” para intentar obtener información de quiénes son los lesionados y qué ha sucedido.
Isabel (nombre cambiado por su seguridad) es hermana de un recluso y expresó que “uno como familia se preocupa y quiere saber algo, pero no dan información exacta. Te mandan de un lado a otro. Ya llevo dando vueltas por todo el hospital y nadie dice nada”.
Un agente de seguridad del Hospital Mazzini comentó la mañana de este 9 de enero que les han dado órdenes de no brindar información.
“La orden es no dar información de nada, aunque la gente diga que los tratamos mal. Aquí no hay listas, ni reos hospitalizados, ni nada”, expuso.
Una fuente cercana al penal informó que las autoridades de Centros Penales llegaron a Sonsonate la noche del incidente. Según esta fuente, alrededor de 25 reclusos estuvieron involucrados en la riña y algunos fueron trasladados al Hospital Mazzini, mientras que los que tenían heridas más graves fueron llevados a San Salvador.
Al cierre de esta nota el personal de seguridad del hospital reiteró que no se brindará información ni a familiares ni a la prensa sobre la situación de los reos implicados.
