The Catholic Church has spoken out three times against the repeal of the prohibition on metal mining and could play a key role in the renewed resistance against the most polluting of extractive industries.

The first response came from the Episcopal Secretariat of Central America on November 29th, immediately after Nayib Bukele announced his intentions to repeal the ban on metal mining. The bishops of the region, who were meeting in San Salvador, urged governments not to allow mining to “safeguard God’s creation.”

Two days later, on December 1st, during his Sunday press conference, Monsignor José Luis Escobar Alas called on the government to “reconsider the harms of mining” and not repeal the ban. The Archbishop of San Salvador also highlighted the impunity surrounding the murders of anti-mining environmentalists in Cabañas and the current judicial persecution of community leaders from Santa Marta and ADES who oppose metal mining.

Finally, the Episcopal Conference of El Salvador (CEDES) issued a unanimous statement in favor of protecting the “Common Home” against the severe mining threat. In a communiqué signed by all the country’s bishops and published on December 12th, the highest body of the Catholic Church reminded Bukele’s government that “water, health, and life ARE PRICELESS.”

Consistent with this stance, the El Calvario Parish wrote on its social media that repealing the mining ban “is a betrayal of the poorest and most vulnerable people, a betrayal rooted in greed to the detriment of natural resources.” “It’s an irresponsibility of those who favor changing the law,” the statement continued, referring to the imminent repeal of the Metal Mining Prohibition Law.

“There is no way it won’t affect us, there is no responsible mining, and the damage is irreversible, especially in a territory as small as our El Salvador,” the communiqué stated, echoing Pope Francis’s mandate for the Church to “defend creation.”

In this sense, it is expected that all bishops and priests will take on the task of disseminating the ecclesiastical statement against metal mining, promoting organization, and calling on all parishioners to demonstrate for water, the environment, agriculture, health, and life.

Given its territorial presence throughout the country, the Catholic Church’s involvement is crucial in the fight to prevent the ominous mining projects, even if the prohibition is repealed and the disastrous General Metal Mining Law imposed by the suicidal officialdom is approved.

Hopefully, then, the Catholic Church will not be afraid, will be consistent, and will rise to the occasion in this new dangerous situation that the country is facing.

It’s also time for evangelical churches to not permit the destruction of this land given to us by God, to reject greed, and to stand up for life.

El turno de la Iglesia Católica

La Iglesia Católica se ha pronunciado tres veces contra la derogación de la prohibición de la minería metálica y podría jugar un rol clave en la nueva resistencia contra la más contaminante de las industrias extractivas.

Primero fue el Secretariado Episcopal de América Central, el 29 de noviembre, inmediatamente después del anuncio de Nayib Bukele de sus intenciones de derogar la prohibición de la minería de metales. Los obispos de la región, quienes se encontraban reunidos en San Salvador, pidieron a los gobiernos no permitir la minería para “salvaguardar la creación de Dios”.

Dos días después, el 1o. de diciembre, en su conferencia de prensa dominical, Monseñor José Luis Escobar Alas, pidió al gobierno “recapacitar sobre los daños de la minería” y no derogar la prohibición. El Arzobispo de San Salvador también señaló la impunidad en la que han quedado los asesinatos de los ambientalistas antimineros de Cabañas y la actual persecución judicial contra los líderes comunitarios de la Santa Marta y ADES que se oponen a la minería metálica.

Y, finalmente, la Conferencia Episcopal de El Salvador (CEDES) emitió un pronunciamiento unánime en favor de proteger la “Casa Común” frente a la grave amenaza minera. En un comunicado, firmado por todos los obispos del país y publicado el 12 de diciembre, la máxima instancia de la Iglesia Católica le recuerda al gobierno de Bukele que “el agua, la salud y la vida NO TIENEN PRECIO”.

Consecuente con dicha postura, la Parroquia El Calvario escribió en sus redes sociales que derogar la prohibición de la minería “es una traición al pueblo más pobre y vulnerable, traición que tiene sus raíces de avaricia en detrimento de los recursos naturales”. “Es una irresponsabilidad de quienes favorecen modificar la ley”, dice en pronunciamiento, refiriéndose a la inminente derogación de la Ley de Prohibición de la Minería Metálica.

“No hay manera que no afecte, no hay minería responsable y los daños son irreversibles, sobre todo en un territorio tan pequeño como nuestro El Salvador”, afirma el comunicado, haciendo evocando el mandato del Papa Francisco a que la Iglesia “defienda la creación”.

En tal sentido, es esperable que todos los obispos y sacerdotes asuman la tarea de divulgar el pronunciamiento eclesial contra la minería metálica, promuevan la organización y llamen a toda la feligresía a manifestarse por el agua, el medioambiente, la agricultura, la salud y la vida.

Dada su presencia territorial en todo el país, es clave la participación de la Iglesia Católica en la lucha por evitar los tenebrosos proyectos mineros, aun derogada la prohibición y aprobada la nefasta Ley General de Minería Metálica impuesta por el oficialismo suicida.

Ojalá, pues, que la Iglesia Católica no tenga miedo, sea consecuente y esté a la altura de esta nueva situación peligrosa que sufre el país.

El turno es también de las iglesias evangélicas a no permitir la destrucción de esta tierra que Dios nos ha dado, rechazar la codicia y reivindicar la vida.
