The Legislative Assembly will begin discussions to create a metallic mining law that would reinstate the exploitation of these resources in El Salvador, an activity that has been banned since 2017.
Lawmaker Christian Guevara, head of the official party Nuevas Ideas, requested the floor during the plenary session this Friday, December 20th, to ask for a procedural exemption and incorporate a request from the President of the Republic, through the Minister of Economy, to send it for study to the relevant committee.
The proposal to modify the agenda by lawmaker Guevara was approved with 56 official party votes and three votes against from the opposition.
“Initiative of the President of the Republic, through the Minister of Economy, in the sense of approving the General Law of Metallic Mining with the aim of establishing the regulatory framework that allows exploration and exploitation of natural resources in the national territory, goes to the committee of technology, tourism, and investment,” said Ernesto Castro, president of the Assembly. Subsequently, lawmaker Castro called for the committee session on Saturday at 10 in the morning and the plenary session for Monday, December 23rd, where the approval of the requested law is expected.
The request comes just weeks after Nayib Bukele lashed out against the ban on metallic mining in the country, which has been prohibited since 2017, calling it “absurd.”

La Asamblea Legislativa iniciará la discusión para crear una ley de minería metálica que rehabilite la explotación de esos recursos en El Salvador, una actividad prohibida desde 2017.
El diputado Christian Guevara, jefe de fracción del oficialista partido Nuevas Ideas, pidió la palabra durante la sesión plenaria de este viernes 20 de diciembre para solicitar una dispensa de trámite e incorporar una solicitud del presidente de la República, por medio de la ministra de Economía, para que fuera enviada a estudio a la comisión correspondiente.
La propuesta de modificación de agenda del diputado Guevara fue aprobada por 56 votos del oficialismo y tres votos en contra de la oposición.
“Iniciativa del presidente de la República, por medio de la ministra de Economía, en el sentido se apruebe Ley General de Minería Metálica con el objetivo de establecer el marco normativo que permita la exploración y explotación de los recursos naturales en el territorio nacional, pasa a la comisión de tecnología, turismo e inversión”, dijo Ernesto Castro, presidente de la Asamblea.
Acto seguido, el diputado Castro convocó la sesión de la comisión para el sábado a las 10 de la mañana y la sesión plenaria para el lunes 23 de diciembre, donde se espera la aprobación de la ley solicitada.
La petición ocurre a solo semanas de que Nayib Bukele arremetiera contra la prohibición de la minería metálica en el país prohibida desde 2017 calificándola de “absurda.
