The American congressman, who met with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and visited the Counter-Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT, anti-gang), is being investigated by the Ethics Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives over allegations of sexual misconduct and illegal drug consumption, according to Telemundo.

The Spanish-language outlet in the United States reported that the bipartisan panel of Congress decided to investigate as of June 19 whether the congressman received improper gifts, favors, and privileges from individuals with whom he had personal relationships.

The Republican-majority Ethics Committee additionally highlights alleged campaign financing and the acceptance of bribes, according to CNN and EFE.

The AP reported that Gaetz has vehemently denied all allegations before the committee, claiming that it has closed four inquiries that “stemmed from lies aimed solely at discrediting me.”

“Instead of working with me to ban stock trading in Congress, the Ethics Committee is now opening new frivolous investigations. They do this to avoid the obvious fact that every investigation into me concludes the same way: my exoneration,” Gaetz posted on X on June 18.

Gaetz’s visit to El Salvador took place after former U.S. President Donald Trump accused the government on two occasions of “sending criminals” to the North American country.

This Sunday, the congressman posted a photo of himself with President Nayib Bukele accompanied by the caption “Strong men meet.” Later, Bukele shared a video of Gaetz’s visit to CECOT on his social media.

“People in the United States appreciate the state of exception and the existence of CECOT so that these criminals do not harm the Salvadoran people or the people of the United States any further. Many of those incarcerated here would have gone to the United States and would have attacked Americans,” Gaetz stated.

Gaetz leads a mission of four Republican congressmen who met with Bukele on Friday and, according to a video shared by the president on his X account, visited CECOT, where thousands of gang members are held.

Gaetz is the current representative for Florida’s 1st Congressional District and in the video at CECOT, he also expressed that the United States has made a mistake by including El Salvador within the Northern Triangle designation alongside Guatemala and Honduras, arguing that the security measures implemented by Bukele’s administration have been successful and that El Salvador should not be grouped with its Central American neighbors.

On Friday, former President Trump asserted at the Republican National Convention that crime is declining in El Salvador and Venezuela “because they are sending their killers to the United States.”

The Salvadoran president, who has shown sympathy for Trump and attended the main conservative gathering in the U.S. in February, has yet to comment on the assertion made by the Republican presidential candidate.

Bukele launched a “war” against gangs in March 2022 and declared a state of exception, which has been questioned by human rights organizations for allowing arrests without a warrant. Many gang members have fled the country in the face of the crackdown.

Gaetz claimed that the gang members held in CECOT are not committing “homicides” or “thefts,” and therefore, the Salvadoran president’s security policies should be “replicated so that other people can have security, hope, and prosperity.”

Bajo investigación en EE.UU. congresista que visitó el CECOT y se reunió con Bukele

El congresista estadounidense Matt Gaetz, que se reunió con el presidente salvadoreño Nayib Bukele y visitó el Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT, antipandillas), es objeto de una investigación del Comité de Ética de la Cámara Baja del Congreso de los Estados Unidos por denuncias de conducta sexual inapropiada y consumo ilegal de drogas, informó la cadena Telemundo.

El medio hispano en los Estados Unidos dijo que el panel bipartidista del Congreso decidió investigar el pasado 19 de junio además si el congresista recibió obsequios indebidos, favores y privilegios a individuos con los que tenía relaciones personales.

 La Comisión de Ética del Congreso, de mayoría republicana, le señala además presunta financiación de campañas y aceptación de sobornos, de acuerdo con CNN y la agencia EFE.

La agencia AP informó que Gaetz ha negado enérgicamente todas las acusaciones ante la comisión, alegando que el panel de ética cerró cuatro averiguaciones y que éstas “surgieron de mentiras destinadas únicamente a desprestigiarme”.

“En lugar de trabajar conmigo para prohibir el comercio de acciones bursátiles en el Congreso, la Comisión de Ética está abriendo ahora nuevas investigaciones frívolas. Lo hacen para evitar el hecho obvio de que cada investigación sobre mí termina de la misma manera: mi exoneración”, dijo Gaetz en X el 18 de junio pasado.

La visita de Gaetz a El Salvador se produjo tras dos ocasiones en las que el expresidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, acusó al gobierno de “enviar delincuentes” al país norteamericano.

Este domingo el congresista colocó una foto de él junto con el presidente Nayib Bukele con la descripción “Strong men meet”, que puede traducirse como “reunión de hombres fuertes”. Más tarde, Bukele colgó en sus redes sociales el video de la visita de Gaetz en el CECOT.

“Las personas en Estados Unidos agradecemos el estado de excepción y que exista el CECOT para que estos criminales no le hagan más daño al pueblo salvadoreño ni al pueblo de los Estados Unidos. Muchas personas recluidas aquí habrían ido a Estados Unidos y habrían atacado a los estadounidenses”, dijo Gaetz.

Gaetz encabeza una misión de cuatro congresistas republicanos que se reunieron con Bukele el viernes y, según un video difundido por el presidente en su cuenta X, visitaron el Cecot, donde están recluidos miles de pandilleros.

Gaetz es el actual representante del 1.° Distrito Congresional de Florida y, en el video en el CECOT, expresó también que Estados Unidos ha cometido un error al incluir a El Salvador dentro de la figura del Triángulo Norte, junto a Guatemala y Honduras, pues consideró que las medidas en seguridad que ha impulsado la administración Bukele han sido exitosas, por lo que a su juicio, no debe colocarse junto a sus vecinos de Centroamérica.

El viernes, el expresidente Trump aseguró ante la Convención Nacional Republicana que en El Salvador y en Venezuela la criminalidad va en declive “porque están enviando a sus asesinos a Estados Unidos”.

El presidente salvadoreño, que ha mostrado simpatías por Trump y asistió en febrero al principal encuentro de conservadores en Estados Unidos, aún no se ha referido a la afirmación del candidato presidencial republicano.

Bukele lanzó en marzo de 2022 una “guerra” contra las pandillas y declaró un régimen de excepción, cuestionado por organismos de derechos humanos porque permite arrestos sin orden judicial. Muchos pandilleros han huido del país ante la ofensiva.

Gaetz afirmó que los pandilleros recluidos en el Cecot no están cometiendo “homicidios” o “robos”, por lo que las políticas de seguridad del presidente salvadoreño deben “replicarse para que otros pueblos tengan seguridad, esperanza y prosperidad”.
