Dear friends,
There is always a treacherous tweet. Christian Guevara, foreman of the Nuevas Ideas lawmakers, tweeted on October 9, 2022, the following tweet: “Do you remember when the teacher appeared 3 days after a tragedy had passed? Now prevention comes first.”
Of course, Guevara is not an expert in prevention or civil protection; he was recruited from Porfirio Chica’s Plan B company-office – a propaganda company that manages the famous group of prepaid columnists.
But at some point in his life, he was a journalist, or at least he tried to be one. I met him when he interviewed me for El Faro, along with El Chele Carlos Martínez, at the Punto Literario café. He seemed to be a sharp guy. So, he must be aware that he is talking nonsense. He is right to criticize President Sánchez Cerén for his inactivity, as we all did. But claiming that things are better now with Bukele in charge is false.
The emergency due to Storm Alberto began on June 12, but the government addressed it on June 13 when it declared a green alert, the lowest on the emergency scale. Not a word from Bukele. At this point, his topics on Twitter are: his interview with Tucker and a joke about airport security agents playing pranks on tourists, which, according to him, proves that security has been fully achieved in the country.
On June 14, Civil Protection upgraded the emergency to an orange alert, and school classes were suspended. Bukele tweets about surfing, praises his brothers, Trumpist congressman Matt Gaetz, and Senator Rubio. Not a mention of the emergency that is already being experienced throughout almost the entire territory. Bukele begins his campaign against power distribution companies for excessive charges. He orders the Attorney General’s office to raid their offices. The attorney general promptly complies.
On June 15, the situation in the country worsens dramatically. Bukele retweets a report from Huracán Info, announcing more rain in El Salvador, and a statement from the Ministry of Environment, warning of the risk of floods and overflows. The rest of the day, Bukele talks about his main topic: the attorney general’s action against AES and DelSur, stating the phrase of the day: “The State works.”
But the State does not work on the ground, it does not work for those affected by the floods. On Sunday, June 16, after the first 2 deaths, a red alert is declared at last. Bukele mentions it on Twitter but has not yet visited the affected territory. He does not visit the families of the deceased. That dark day for the people, his main focus is on the visit of Patricia Bullrich, Argentina’s Security Minister, and a Milei ally, to CECOT, and the announcement that Argentina will apply Bukeke’s security measures. Congratulations. Obviously, it is more important than the disaster throughout the country. But of course, “the State works” because, by Bukele’s orders, “bitter medicine” is applied to the power distribution companies. No one should think that the “bitter medicine” prescribed by Bukele on June 1 was for the people… To comfort the affected, Bukele retweets a prayer from his favorite pastor Dante Gebel. No one should think he does not care about the poor struggling to survive the disaster.
On June 17, the death toll from the rains has risen to 11. Bukele decrees a national day off on Twitter to minimize dangers for the population. One day! But he has not gone to any of the disaster epicenters, nor has he visited any shelter or any family that has suffered the loss of lives.
On June 18, Bukele’s main topic is his meeting at the Presidential House with the Argentine minister. 10 tweets from Bukele about this historic event, the last one with the news that will please all Salvadorans, rain or shine: Bukele has been invited to an official visit to Argentina, and he says: “Buenos Aires is the most beautiful city in the world”.
Bukele has not yet visited the affected areas, because it is raining.
And so it goes: Bukele tweeting about the absence of homicide victims, but not a word about the people who died from the rains and the deficient prevention and protection measures by his government. Another topic that occupies him is that Forbes Central America magazine has dedicated its cover and a tribute to him: “There is a before and after Nayib Bukele for El Salvador; one of the smallest countries on the continent that has something important to show the world.” Who can doubt that this is the news of the day?
The emergency ended when the rain stopped, but vulnerability problems remain unanswered. In this sense, Bukele is more of the same, because he did nothing, just like previous governments.
In summary: Christian Guevara lied. Now, “prevention doesn’t come first.” And Bukele is just as absent when the country suffers. Not once did he get his hair wet or his branded sneakers dirty.
But do not complain, Salvadorans, since June 1 it is forbidden to complain.

Carta sobre la ausencia de Bukele cuando el pueblo sufre
Estimados amigos:
Siempre hay un tuit traicionero. Christian Guevara, capataz de los diputados de Nuevas Ideas, publicó el 9 de octubre del 2022 el siguiente tuit:“¿Se acuerdan cuando el profe apareció 3 días después de que había pasado una tragedia? Ahora se previene antes.”
Claro, Guevara no es un experto en prevención ni en protección civil, lo reclutaron de la oficina de la empresa Plan B de Porfirio Chica – empresa de propaganda que maneja el famoso grupo de columnistas prepago.
Pero en algún momento de su vida era periodista, o por lo menos trataba de serlo. Lo conocí cuando junto con El Chele Carlos Martínez me entrevistó para El Faro, en el café Punto Literario. Parecía un bicho despierto. Así que debe de estar claro que está diciendo bobadas. Tiene razón en criticar al presidente Sánchez Cerén por su inactividad, todos lo hicimos. Pero diciendo que esto ahora, con Bukele al cargo, sea mejor es mentira.
La emergencia por la tormenta Alberto comienza el 12 de junio, pero es atendida por el gobierno a partir del 13, cuando decreta alerta verde, la más baja en la escala de emergencias. Ni una palabra de Bukele. A esta altura, sus temas en Twitter son: su entrevista con Tucker y un chiste sobre los agentes de seguridad del aeropuerto jugando bromas a turistas, lo que, según él, evidencia que la seguridad ya es total en el país.
El 14 de junio, Protección Civil eleva la emergencia a alerta naranja y se suspenden las clases en las escuelas. Bukele tuitea de surf, tira flores a sus brothers, el congresista trumpista Matt Gaetz y el senador Rubio. Ni una mención de la emergencia que a esta altura ya se vive casi en todo territorio. Bukele comienza su campaña contra las distribuidoras eléctricas por cobros excesivos. Ordena a la Fiscalía a allanar sus oficinas. El fiscal general cumple de inmediato.
El 15 de junio, la situación en el país se agrava dramáticamente. Bukele retuitea un informe del sitio Huracán Info, que anuncia más lluvias en El Salvador, y un comunicado del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, que advierte sobre peligro de inundaciones y desbordamientos. El resto del día Bukele habla de su tema central: la acción de la fiscalía contra AES y DelSur, diciendo la frase del día: “El Estado funciona”.
Pero el Estado no funciona en el terreno, no funciona para los afectados por las inundaciones. El domingo 16, luego de los primeros 2 muertos, al fin se declara alerta roja. Bukele la menciona en Twitter, pero todavía no sale al territorio. No visita a las familias de los muertos. Este día negro para la gente su gran tema es la visita de Patricia Bullrich, la ministra de Seguridad de su amigo Milei de Argentina, al CECOT, y el anuncio que en Argentina van a aplicar las medidas de seguridad de Bukele. Felicidades. Obviamente, es más importante que el desastre en todo el país. Pero claro, “el Estado funciona”, porque por órdenes de Bukele se aplica “medicina amarga” a las empresas de distribución eléctrica. Que nadie vaya a pensar que la “medica amarga”, que Bukele recetó el 1 de junio, era para el pueblo… Para aliviar a los afectados, Bukele retuitea una oración de su pastor favorito Dante Gebel. Que nadie vaya pensar que no se preocupa por los pobres que luchan por sobrevivir el desastre.
El 17 de junio, el número de muertos por causa de las lluvias ya asciende a 11. Bukele decreta en Twitter un día de asueto nacional para minimizar los peligros para la población. ¡Un día! Pero no ha ido a ninguno de los epicentros del desastre, no ha visitado ningún albergue y a ninguna familia que sufrió pérdidas de vidas.
El 18 de junio, el gran tema de Bukele es su reunión en Casa Presidencial con la ministra argentina. 10 tuits de Bukele sobre este hecho histórico, el último con la noticia, que va a alegrarles a todos los salvadoreños, llueva lo que llueva: Bukele ha sido invitado a una visita oficial a Argentina, y dice: “Buenos Aires es la ciudad más bonita del mundo”.
Todavía Bukele no ha salido al terreno, porque llueve.
Y así sigue: Bukele tuiteando sobre la ausencia de muertos por asesinatos, pero sin palabras sobre los muertos por las lluvias y las deficientes medidas de prevención y protección de su gobierno. El otro tema que le ocupa es que la revista Forbes Centroamérica le ha dedicado a él su portada y un homenaje: “Hay un antes y un después de Nayib Bukele para El Salvador; uno de los países más pequeños del continente, que tiene algo importante que mostrar al mundo”. ¿Quién puede dudar que esto sea la noticia del día?
La emergencia terminó, cuando dejó de llover, pero los problemas de vulnerabilidad continúan sin respuestas. En este sentido, Bukele es más de lo mismo, porque no hizo nada, igual que los gobiernos anteriores.
Resumamos: Mentira lo que dijo Christian Guevara. Ahora no “se previene antes”. Y Bukele es igual de ausente, cuando el país sufre. Ni una sola vez se mojó su pelo engomado ni se ensució sus tenis de marca.
Pero no se quejen, salvadoreños, desde el 1 de junio es prohibido quejarse.
