The inhabitants of the Nuevo Israel community regret that the Government did not keep the promises it made in 2020. In that year, at least 50 families lost their homes due to a landslide caused by the overflowing of the river during storms Amanda and Cristobal.
The seriousness of what happened in this community led the president himself, Nayib Bukele, to promise housing for those directly affected and mitigation works for the rest of the community. The delivery of the houses took several weeks, amid irregularities with the delivery of the deeds, but the mitigation works never arrived.
The inhabitants question that if the government has the budget to build roads, parks and even hold the Miss Universe pageant, they should also invest money in vulnerable communities.
Some of the most important promises made by the president, Nayib Bukele, was that he would give $10,000 to all the families who lost their homes so that they could recover them, however, a resident of the uninhabitable area of the Nuevo Israel community, whom we will call Ana, as she preferred not to be identified for fear, says that “here they have not come to say we will give you $10”.
Another promise of the Government was to relocate the affected inhabitants, however, this was only for those who had completely lost their homes. This group of people were relocated to Residencial Marsella, in San Juan Opico, but many are still in danger, as is the case of Ana.

Los habitantes de la comunidad Nuevo Israel lamentan que el Gobierno no cumpliera las promesas que hizo en 2020. En ese año, al menos 50 familias perdieron sus viviendas debido a un derrumbe por el desbordamiento del río durante las tormentas Amanda y Cristobal.
La gravedad de lo ocurrido en esta comunidad, hizo que el mismo presidente, Nayib Bukele, llegara para prometer viviendas a los afectados directos y obras de mitigación para el resto de la comunidad. La entrega de las viviendas tardó varias semanas, en medio de irregularidades con la entrega de las escrituras, pero las obras de mitigación nunca llegaron.
Los habitantes cuestionan que si el Gobierno tiene presupuesto para construir carreteras, parques e incluso realizar el concurso de Miss Universo, también tendrían que invertir dinero en las comunidades vulnerables.
