During epidemiological week 15 (April 7-13), cases of diarrhea and gastroenteritis continued to decline in El Salvador, but the number of deaths caused by these diseases remained at record levels.
The latest data published by the Ministry of Health (MINSAL) indicate that during week 15 there were 6,628 cases of diarrhea in the country, 300 fewer than in week 14. This was the sixth consecutive drop since week 9, according to official statistics.
Despite the downward trend, acute diarrheal diseases (ADDs) led to the hospitalization of 5,330 people in the first 15 weeks of 2024. Compared to the same period of 2023, this year saw 943 more hospitalizations, an increase of 21.5%.
Unlike the bulletins that MINSAL published in previous years, the new format excludes the number of deaths due to ADDs and only makes the case fatality rate available to the public, which is the percentage of hospitalized patients who died from diarrhea.
With these two data points, it can be inferred that as of week 15, 32 people died due to these conditions. This is the highest number since 2016 when there were 33 fatalities at the same time.
The number of hospitalizations caused by acute diarrheal diseases has also remained at record levels. According to MINSAL records, the 5,330 reported this year represent the highest number in the last six years. The last time a similar figure was reported for this period was in 2017 when there were 6,065.
In total, health centers have reported 127,852 cases of diarrhea to the ministry so far this year, and a significant portion of these patients are children up to 9 years old.
Official statistics indicate that up to week 15, 39,830 cases of diarrheal diseases were reported in children up to 9 years old, although the most affected group is 1 to 4 years old, with 29,911 cases.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), diarrheal diseases are the third leading cause of death in children aged 1 to 59 months. Furthermore, “each year, diarrhea kills 443,832 children under 5 years old and another 50,851 children aged 5 to 9 years,” states the international health organization. In total, the WHO indicates that health systems report 1.7 billion cases of diarrheal diseases in children annually.
The second age group with the highest number of cases is young people aged 20 to 29, where 25,103 ADDs were reported in the first 15 weeks of 2024. Another 19,174 cases have been registered in the 30 to 39 age group.
The WHO points out that there are three main causes of diarrhea. One of them is infection caused by bacterial, viral, and parasitic organisms. Most of these are transmitted through water contaminated by feces. “Infection is more common when there is a lack of hygiene and adequate sanitation services, and safe drinking water for drinking, cooking, and washing,” the organization states.
Malnutrition can also cause diarrhea, as can water sources contaminated with human feces. Animal feces also contain organisms that can cause diarrheal diseases.
Muertes por diarreas se mantienen en niveles récord en El Salvador
En la semana epidemiológica 15 (7 al 13 de abril), los casos de diarreas y gastroenteritis siguieron bajando en El Salvador, pero la cantidad de muertes ocasionadas por estas enfermedades continuaron en niveles récord.
Los últimos datos publicados por el Ministerio de Salud (MINSAL) indican que en la semana 15 hubo 6,628 casos de diarreas en el país, 300 menos que en la semana 14. Este fue el sexto descenso consecutivo desde la semana 9, indican las estadísticas oficiales.
Pese a la tendencia a la baja, las enfermedades diarreicas agudas (EDAS) condujeron al hospital a 5,330 personas en las primeras 15 semanas de 2024. En comparación con el mismo periodo de 2023, este año hubo 943 hospitalizaciones más, es decir, un incremento del 21.5 %.
A diferencia de los boletines que el MINSAL publicó en años anteriores, el nuevo formato excluye la cantidad de muertes por EDAS y únicamente pone a disposición del público la tasa de letalidad, que no es más que el porcentaje de hospitalizados que han fallecido por diarreas.
Con estos dos datos es posible inferir que, hasta la semana 15, fallecieron 32 personas a causa de estos padecimientos. Esta es la cifra más alta desde 2016, cuando para esa misma época hubo 33 fallecidos.
La cantidad de hospitalizaciones ocasionadas por enfermedades diarreicas agudas también se ha mantenido en niveles récord. Según los registros del MINSAL, los 5,330 reportados este año representan la cantidad más alta de los últimos seis años. La última vez que la cartera de Estado reportó una cifra similar, para esta época, fue en 2017, cuando hubo 6,065.
En total, los centros de salud le han reportado al ministerio 127,852 casos de diarreas en lo que va de este año y buena parte de estos pacientes son pacientes de hasta 9 años.
Las estadísticas oficiales indican que hasta la semana 15 se reportaron 39,830 casos de enfermedades diarreicas en niñez de hasta 9 años, aunque el grupo más afectado es el de 1 a 4 años, con 29,911.
Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), las enfermedades diarreicas son la tercera causa de muerte en la niñez de 1 a 59 meses de edad. Además, “cada año, la diarrea mata a 443,832 niños menores de 5 años y a otros 50,851 niños de 5 a 9 años”, afirma el organismo sanitario internacional. En total, indica la OMS, anualmente los sistemas de salud reportan 1,700 millones de casos de enfermedades diarreicas en la niñez.
El segundo grupo etario con la mayor cantidad de casos son los jóvenes de 20 a 29 años, donde se han reportado 25,103 EDAS en las primeras 15 semanas de 2024. Otros 19,174 casos se han registrado en el grupo de los 30 a 39.
La OMS señala que existen tres grandes causas de diarreas. Una de ellas es la infección provocada por organismos bacterianos, víricos y parásitos. La mayoría de estos se transmiten a través de aguas contaminadas por heces. “La infección es más común cuando hay escasez de higiene y servicios de saneamiento adecuados, y de agua potable para beber, cocinar y lavar”, afirma la entidad.
Pero también la malnutrición puede ocasionar diarrea, así como las fuentes de agua contaminadas con heces humanas. Las heces de animales también contienen organismos que pueden ocasionar enfermedades diarreicas.
