El Salvador has started negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China, according to the Minister of Economy, María Luisa Hayem, who assured that a comprehensive and integral agreement is sought to boost the country’s economic development.

Both countries have committed to establishing a working group to define the General Framework for Negotiations. This framework will include the general principles that will govern the talks, as well as the modalities and a detailed roadmap.

Minister Hayem emphasized that the first step in this process will be to establish and agree on the terms of reference for the negotiation. This will involve determining the negotiation groups, the languages to be used, and the documents valid for the process. In the interview, the Minister also highlighted recent economic announcements, such as the inauguration of Google’s offices, underlining the relevance of the FTA negotiations with China.

The International Trade representative and Chinese Deputy Minister of Commerce, Wang Shouwen, joined Hayem to announce the start of these negotiations. He highlighted the rapid development of bilateral relations in recent years, with an emphasis on the economic and trade achievements attained.

According to Shouwen, El Salvador has actively participated in Chinese imports, with products such as coffee and sugar.

On the other hand, the Chinese ambassador to El Salvador, Zhang Yanhui, stressed that this treaty will not only strengthen economic and cooperative relations between both nations but also enhance investment opportunities in the country. The reduction of tariffs is expected to benefit Salvadoran families, even reducing the cost of living and generating more employment and business opportunities.

China’s commercial expansion in Latin America in recent decades has gone from $7,000 million to $64,000 million, but at the current rate, it is predicted to reach $700,000 million in the next 13 years, according to an analysis by the Center for International Studies of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (CEIUC) on the rise of the Asian country in the continent conducted in 2022.

El Salvador ha iniciado las negociaciones para un Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) con China, según lo informó la ministra de Economía, María Luisa Hayem, quien aseguró que se busca un tratado completo e integral que pueda impulsar el desarrollo económico del país.

Ambos países se han comprometido a establecer una mesa de trabajo para definir el Marco General de las Negociaciones. Este marco incluirá los principios generales que regirán las conversaciones, así como las modalidades y una hoja de ruta detallada.

La ministra Hayem enfatizó que el primer paso en este proceso será establecer y acordar los términos de referencia de la negociación. Esto implicará determinar los grupos de negociación, los idiomas a utilizar y los documentos válidos para el proceso. En la entrevista, la Ministra también destacó los anuncios en materia económica realizados recientemente, como la inauguración de las oficinas de Google, subrayando la relevancia de las negociaciones del TLC con China.

El representante de Comercio Internacional y viceministro de Comercio de China, Wang Shouwen, se unió a Hayem para anunciar el inicio de estas negociaciones. Destacó el rápido desarrollo de las relaciones bilaterales en los últimos años, con énfasis en los logros económicos y comerciales alcanzados.

Según Shouwen, El Salvador ha participado activamente en las importaciones chinas, con productos como café y azúcar.
