Around 50 organizations, networks, committees, forums, and spaces within the Salvadoran social movement rejected the judicial persecution against the community leaders of Santa Marta and ADES.
Morena Murillo, from APROCSAL, stated, “a year after the arbitrary arrests, it has been proven that this is not a genuine case of seeking truth and justice, but a manipulation of the judicial system to persecute these environmental defenders for their opposition to mining projects.”
On the morning of January 11, 2023, a combined force of police and military surrounded the Santa Marta Community in the municipality of San Isidro, Cabañas, in the eastern part of the country, with the aim of capturing the community leaders Miguel Ángel Gómez, Alejandro Laínez García, Pedro Antonio Rivas Laínez, Saúl Agustín Rivas Ortega, and Teodoro Antonio Pacheco, who are leaders of the community and directors of ADES-Santa Marta.
The conglomerate of organizations reiterated their call to the central government, stating that they will maintain their opposition to attempts to repeal the Law of Prohibition against Metallic Mining, due to its unfeasibility and the high level of contamination of the country’s natural resources caused by this industry.

Exigen cese a persecución judicial contra los líderes comunitarios
Alrededor de 50 organizaciones, redes, mesas, foros y espacios del movimiento social salvadoreño rechazaron la persecución judicial contra los líderes comunitarios de Santa Marta y ADES.
Morena Murillo, de APROCSAL, afirmó “a un año después de las detenciones arbitrarias, está demostrado que no se trata de un caso genuino de búsqueda de la verdad y justicia, sino de una manipulación del sistema judicial para perseguir a estos defensores ambientales por su oposición a proyectos mineros”.
La madrugada del 11 de enero de 2023, un combinado policías y militares rodearon la Comunidad Santa Marta, en el municipio de San Isidro, Cabañas, en el Oriente del país, con el fin de capturar a los dirigentes comunitarios Miguel Ángel Gómez, Alejandro Laínez García, Pedro Antonio Rivas Laínez, Saúl Agustín Rivas Ortega y Teodoro Antonio Pacheco, líderes de la comunidad y directivos ADES-Santa Marta.
El conglomerado de organizaciones reiteró el llamado al gobierno central, que mantendrán su negativa a los intentos de anular la Ley de Prohibición contra la Minería Metálica, por su inviabilidad y por el alto nivel de contaminación de bienes naturales del país que esa industria provoca.
