The Union of Medical Workers of the Social Security (SIMETRISSS) asserted yesterday that at least 15 doctors have been suspended from in-person shifts in retaliation for pointing out deficiencies within the institution’s hospitals.
Through a statement published on the social network X (Twitter.com), the SIMETRISSS affirmed that in face of “the current crisis” in the Social Security hospitals due to “lack of beds, medical supplies, and medications, we want to denounce the lack of hiring for in-person shifts of general and specialist doctors for making the allegations of the already described shortages, harming the Salvadoran population who uses the ISSS”.
The SIMETRISSS also urged President Nayib Bukele to “take a change of course in the ISSS administration before it’s too late”.
Consulted by LA PRENSA GRÁFICA, a union source who asked for anonymity, said, “right now there are 15 (doctors) that have told us, that we know of”.
The source explained that the in-person shifts “are a purchase of professional services. In doing so, we sign a contract with the Social Security from January 1 to December 31 of the current year”. The shifts represent for the doctors an extra income to the salary they already receive for their position within the institution.
According to what SIMETRISSS has documented, they began suspending doctors from these shifts in April. “We have seen that they were (suspending) one or two per month, but the last month it has become more pronounced”, said the source. They added that in September they receive the workers’ resumes to continue working, “so, many (doctors) have not been renewed”.
Unionists have identified suspensions in La Unión, in the General, Medical Surgical, and Amatepec hospitals.
“They are doing it with people who have made allegations at the time. They have told the authorities, the public opinion, on their networks or somewhere they have made comments and also that have passed comments to us”, indicated the source from SIMETRISSS.
The union assured that among the doctors excluded from the shifts there are not only general doctors, also specialists and subspecialists. “There are internists, surgeons, gynecologists, family medicine doctors”, said the source.
However, the ISSS is not replacing the specialists and is only hiring general doctors for these shifts. This situation has ended up affecting the beneficiaries of the Social Security, they added.
“So, the general doctors consult with the remaining specialists, (but) that delays the attention that the colleague is giving and delays the attention that the general doctor is giving”, explained the unionist.
“There is a delay definitely, workload overload for the specialist doctors and it is delaying the direct and indirect attention of the patient”, they emphasized.
The SIMETRISSS assured that they have sought to dialogue with the Social Security administration to resolve this situation, but have not had a response.

Represalias contra médicos que señalaron carencias en el Seguro Social
El Sindicato de Médicos Trabajadores y Trabajadoras del Seguro Social (SIMETRISSS) aseguró ayer que al menos 15 médicos han sido suspendidos de turnos presenciales en represalia por señalar carencias dentro de los hospitales de la institución.
A través de un comunicado publicado en la red social X (Twitter.com), el SIMETRISSS afirmó que ante “la crisis actual” en los hospitales del Seguro Social por “falta de camas, insumos médicos y medicamentos queremos denunciar la falta de contratación para turnos presenciales de médicos generales y especialistas por hacer las denuncias de las carencias ya descritas, perjudicando a la población salvadoreña usuaria del ISSS”.
El SIMETRISSS también instó al presidente Nayib Bukele a “dar un giro de timón en la administración del ISSS antes que sea demasiado tarde”.
Consultada por LA PRENSA GRÁFICA, una fuente del sindicato, quien pidió anonimato, dijo que “ahorita son 15 (médicos) que nos han dicho a nosotros, que nosotros conocemos”.
La fuente explicó que los turnos presenciales “son compra de servicios profesionales. Al ser así, firmamos un contrato con el Seguro Social del 1 de enero al 31 de diciembre del año en curso”. Los turnos representan para los médicos un ingreso extra al salario que ya reciben por su plaza dentro de la institución.
Según lo que ha documentado SIMETRISSS, en abril comenzaron a suspender a médicos de estos turnos. “Hemos visto que venían (suspendiendo) uno o dos por mes, pero ya el último mes se ha hecho más pronunciado”, dijo la fuente. Agregó que en septiembre reciben los currículums de los trabajadores para continuar laborando, “entonces, a bastantes (médicos) no se los han renovado”.
Sindicalistas han identificado suspensiones en La Unión, en los hospitales General, Médico Quirúrgico y Amatepec.
“Lo están haciendo con personas que han hecho denuncias en su momento. Lo han dicho a las autoridades, a la opinión pública, en sus redes o en alguna parte que han hecho comentarios y también que nos han pasado comentarios a nosotros”, indicó la fuente del SIMETRISSS.
El sindicato aseguró que entre los médicos excluidos de los turnos no solo hay generales, también especialistas y subespecialistas. “Hay médicos internistas, cirujanos, ginecólogos, de medicina familiar”, dijo la fuente.
Sin embargo, el ISSS no está sustituyendo a los especialistas y solo está contratando a médicos generales para estos turnos, una situación que ha terminado por afectar a los derechohabientes del Seguro Social, agregó.
“Entonces, los médicos generales interconsultan con los especialistas que quedan, (pero) eso retrasa la atención que el compañero está dando y retrasa la atención que está dando el médico general”, explicó el sindicalista.
“Hay un retraso definitivamente, sobrecarga de trabajo para los médicos especialistas y está retrasando la atención directa e indirecta del paciente”, subrayó.
El SIMETRISSS aseguró que ha buscado dialogar con la administración del Seguro Social para dirimir esta situación, pero no ha tenido respuesta.
LA PRENSA GRÁFICA también buscó la postura de la institución, pero al cierre de esta nota tampoco hubo respuesta.
