Ernesto Muyshondt, the ex-mayor of San Salvador (47 years old), was hospitalized this Thursday, as confirmed by Arturo Muyshondt, uncle and lawyer of the ex-official, to Tele2 News.
According to the source, the former mayor of the capital city went on a hunger strike for more than four weeks, which affected his health, and he had to be admitted to a medical center.
Former mayor Muyshondt was arrested in June 2021 under accusations of having participated in negotiations with gangs to receive support in the elections for his political party, ARENA, in the 2014 elections. He was charged with the crime of illicit negotiations.
On June 6, 2022, during a hearing against him, Muyshondt spoke in front of the media with signs of an evident deterioration of his health and declared then that “I have been three times on the verge of death, I have been taken out of the penitentiary center in emergency and by a miracle of God they have been able to save my life in a private hospital.”
“I am being extremely mistreated and provoked in the penitentiary center; they have gotten into the cell and taken pictures of me while I sleep. They have tied me up, beaten me, and photographed me half-naked,” Muyshondt explained.
“I would not have wanted to say anything about this, but they are getting to the point where they are causing my death,” he added.

Ernesto Muyshondt, exalcalde de San Salvador (47 años), fue hospitalizado este jueves, según confirmó Arturo Muyshondt, tío y abogado del exfuncionario, a Noticiero Tele2.
De acuerdo con lo explicado por la fuente, el extitular de la capital hizo una huelga de hambre de más de cuatro semanas, lo cual mermó su salud y tuvo que ser ingresado a un centro médico.
El exalcalde Muyshondt fue detenido en junio de 2021, bajo señalamientos de haber participado en negociaciones con pandillas para recibir apoyo en las elecciones para su partido político, ARENA, en las elecciones de 2014. Se le acusó del delito de negociaciones ilícitas.
El 6 de junio de 2022, durante una audiencia en su contra, Muyshondt habló frente a los medios con muestras de una evidente desmejoría de salud, y declaró entonces que “he estado tres veces al borde de la muerte, me han sacado de emergencia del centro penitenciario y por milagro de Dios me han podido salvar la vida en un hospital privado”.
“Estoy siendo sumamente maltratado y provocado en el centro penitenciario, han llegado al extremo de meterse en la celda y me han hecho fotos mientras duermo. Me han amarrado, me han golpeado y me han fotografiado semidesnudo”, explicó Muyshondt en esa ocasión.
“Yo no habría querido decir nada de esto pero están llegando al momento que están provocando mi muerte”, agregó.
