Despite that, he points out that the government has resorted to countless mechanisms to try to silence independent journalism, resulting in severe deterioration of press freedom and freedom of expression. Dada assures that the award is given to him by the International Press Institute this year, more than an award for his trajectory, recognizes this deterioration and the threats to such rights. El director de El Faro, Carlos Dada, refuta el discurso oficialista que afirma que el hecho de que en el país no haya periodistas muertos ni detenidos es una muestra clara de que en El Salvador existe una irrestricta libertad de prensa. Si no hemos llegado a ese punto, sostiene, ha sido por las denuncias constantes del gremio y de las organizaciones de la sociedad civil. A pesar de eso, señala que el gobierno ha recurrido a incontables mecanismos para tratar de callar al periodismo independiente, que han redundado en un grave deterioro de las libertades de prensa y de expresión. Dada asegura de hecho que el premio que le entregó el Instituto Internacional de Prensa este año, más que un galardón a su trayectoria es un reconocimiento de ese deterioro y de las amenazas que se ciernen sobre dichos derechos. Un panorama que prevé empeorará aún más.
