Ernesto Castro, the president of the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly, and one of the main leaders of president Bukele’s party Nuevas Ideas, reacted with personal attacks to critics pronounced by pastor Mario Vega, head of the ELIM church, and father Andreu Oliva S.J., rector of the Jesuits university UCA.

Both have criticized in recent interviews that the Bukele government is concentrating power, eradicating the judicial independence, attacking the independent press and preparing a dictatorship in El Salvador. Both Vega and Oliva are very visible religious leaders, due to their importance of the institutions they head and to their influence in public opinion through the editorials they are publishing regularly. 

Ernesto Castro asked in his Twitter account: “Since when Mario Vega is the voice of the Salvadoran Christians and/or of the interpretation of the Sacred Scripts? Something has to be clear: he is promoted as opinion leader and influencer are the 3% and part of the media, not the evangelical community.”

Castro also attacked university rector Andreu Oliva, who criticized that the legislative bench of Nuevas Ideas removed on May 1 the members of the Constitutional Chamber and the Attorney General and substituted them with lawyers allied with the government. He rated as ‘disastrous’ the legislative work of the Nuevas Ideas bench. 

“It’s normal that Oliva disqualifies the work of our cyan bench. First, because he is the responsible of the mercantilist transformation of the UCA and its vision which is more commercial than academic. The UCA today is just a company that sells education and tries to live from its past,” posted Castro on Twitter.

Ernesto Castro and other leaders of Nuevas Ideas have frequently threatened the UCA to investigate its finances, specially the funds the university received from previous governments. However, the UCA never received grants, but payments for services contracted by the Ministry of Education.

Presidente de la Asamblea arremete contra líderes religiosos

Ernesto Casto, el presidente de la Asamblea Legislativa de El Salvador y uno de los principales dirigentes del partido oficialista Nuevas Ideas de Nayib Bukele, reaccionó con ataques personales a las criticas expresadas por el pastor Mario Vega, pastor general de la iglesia ELIM, y el padre Andreu Oliva S.J., el rector de la universidad jesuita UCA.

Ambos habían señalado en recientes entrevistas que el gobierno Bukele estaba concentrando el poder, erradicando la independencia del sistema judicial, atacando a la prensa independiente y preparando un régimen dictatorial. Tanto Vega como Oliva son dirigentes religiosos muy visibles por la importancia de las instituciones que conducen y por su labor como editorialistas en medios de comunicación.

Ernesto Castro escribió en Twitter: “¿Desde cuándo Mario Vega es el representante o la voz de los cristianos en El Salvador y/o de la interpretación de las Sagradas Escrituras? Es más, algo debe quedar claro: quienes lo impulsan como líder de opinión e ‘influencer del 3%’ son algunos medios, no de la comunidad evangélica.”

Castro también atacó fuertemente al rector de la Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA), Andreu Oliva, quien criticó que el 1 de mayo de 2021 la bancada oficialista destituyó a los magistrados de la Sala de lo Constitucional y al fiscal general para imponer funcionarios alineados con el Ejecutivo. Además calificó de “nefasto” el trabajo de la bancada de Nuevas Ideas en la Asamblea.

“Es normal que Oliva descalifique a la Bancada Cyan y a la Asamblea. Primero porque una de las razones de la mercantilización educativa en la UCA es él y su visión más empresarial que académica. La UCA es hoy solo una empresa que vende educación e intenta vivir de su historia”, tuiteó Castro.

Castro y otros líderes de Nuevas Ideas han frecuentemente amenazado a la UCA con investigaciones y procedimientos judiciales por los fondos estatales que recibió. Sin embargo, nunca se trató de subvenciones, sino de pagos en el contexto contratos de servicios al Ministerio de Educación.
