This Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department announced economic sanctions against Nayib Bukele’s Chief of Staff, Carolina Recinos, under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act and for acts of corruption. Former ambassador and political analyst, Ruben Zamora analyzes the global repercussions of this event. 

“She is the coordinator of the government’s cabinet and she had already been put on the Engel list and her visa was suspended, but today she is already in another more acute case, this is already a punishment and raises the pressure of the United States to a higher level. No other country that I know of has been sanctioned at this level. The Cabinet coordinator is usually the main government minister in presidential systems”, stated Zamora.

For the former ambassador, this sanction represents something more globalized and he highlighted three effects: 

– First, the impact on the possibility of U.S. investment in El Salvador: “They no longer want to invest and that is already happening. We have gone through the lowest investment from the United States in a long time.”

– U.S. companies in the country are beginning to be in a situation of uncertainty, because they know that U.S. sanctions will continue to grow and that can also affect them. “They are not all going to leave, but they will start to reduce their investment in El Salvador.”

– The repercussions of these international accusations: “All this is a negative repercussion, it is telling the Europeans, for example, ‘watch out, look what is happening there’.”

Other experts in the field have also expressed their concern about the gigantic financial repercussions of these sanctions.

Este jueves, el departamento del Tesoro de Estados Unidos anunció sanciones económicas contra la jefa de Gabinete de Nayib Bukele, Carolina Recinos, bajo la Ley Global Magnitsky sobre Responsabilidad de Derechos Humanos, y por actos de corrupción. Ante esto, el ex embajador y analista político, Ruben Zamora hace un análisis de las repercusiones a nivel global de este suceso. 

“Ella es la coordinadora del Gabinete de gobierno y ya la habían puesto en la lista Engel y suspendido la visa, pero hoy ya está en otro caso más agudo, ya eso es un castigo y eleva la presión de Estados Unidos a un nivel más alto. A ningún otro país que yo conozca le han sancionado a ese nivel, o sea, la coordinadora de Gabinete suele ser en sistemas presidencialistas el principal ministro de gobierno”, afirmó Zamora.

Para el ex embajador, esta sanción representa algo  más globalizado y destacó tres afectaciones: 

• La primera, el impacto en la posibilidad de inversión de los Estados Unidos en El Salvador. “Ya no quieren invertir y eso ya está pasando, hemos pasado por la menor inversión de Estados Unidos en mucho tiempo.”

• Las empresas norteamericanas empiezan a estar en una situación de incertidumbre, porque saben que las sanciones de Estados Unidos van a seguir creciendo, y entonces eso también los puede afectar a ellos que están aquí. “No es que se van a ir todas, pero sí que van a empezar reducir su inversión en El Salvador”.

• La repercusión de estos señalamientos a nivel internacional: “Todo eso es una repercusión negativa, es decirles a los europeos, por ejemplo, ‘ojo, miren lo que está pasando ahí’.”

Otros expertos en la materia han expresado también su preocupación por las gigantescas repercusiones financieras de estas sanciones.
