Former member of Salvadoran Supreme Court calls on judges to defend the independent judiciary

Former Salvadoran Supreme Court member Sidney Blanco, illegally removed last May by the new National Assembly dominated by president Bukeles party Nuevas Ideas, denounced in a radio interview “the government’s interference in the legislative and judicial branches.” He sustained that the attempt to concentrate power generates serious consequences for ordinary citizens.

Last September the former member of the Supreme Court was also removed from his judgeship at one of the Appellate Chambers, using a recently approved legislation that send all judges over the age of 60 in early retirement. According to Mr. Blanco, the imposed changes in the Salvadoran judiciary will lead to “a general defenselessness” of citizens being accused or seeking justice.

Mr. Blanco called on his fellow judges to overcome fear and speak out against the attacks on judicial independency. His conclusion: “Our democracy is in danger” and needs to be defended.
