Thousands marching against governments abuses in El Salvador

Oct 21, 2021

The march was joined by huge contingents of veterans of the Salvadoran civil war, both from the army and the guerrilla forces, demanding compliance with the promises of pensions

Last Sunday October 17th thousands of Salvadorans participated in a protest march bringing together different political and social groups, but which all reject the dismantling of the democratic institutions in their country. The march ended in a multitudinous meeting held in the historical center of San Salvador, in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace.

What united all the different groups and citizens was the rejection of presidential re-election, which is not allowed by the Salvadoran Constitution, but was authorized by the new Constitutional Chamber imposed illegally by the new National Assembly, dominated by Bekele’s Nuevas Ideas party; of the imposition of Bitcoin as legal tender; of the erosion of judicial independence; and of the lack of transparency of public spending.

The march was joined by huge contingents of veterans of the Salvadoran civil war, both from the army and the guerrilla forces, demanding compliance with the promises of pensions. Also marching were students who denounce that the government is increasing the military spending and reducing the budget of the public university.

The Salvadoran police put in place roadblock in the principal roads entering the capital to block the buses carrying people from other towns to the meeting.
